Falklands hero H Jones's son to command British troops in Afghanistan

?We are all shaped by our parents and the person I am now was shaped by my father while he was alive. He was a larger-than-life character and a fantastic father to have.?

He added: ?I prefer to keep Rupert Jones the army officer and Rupert Jones the son separate but I accept there will always be some overlap.?

Brig Jones joined up in 1990 and was trained as an officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst from where he joined the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment, where his father had also begun his service.

When it was merged to form part of the Rifles in 2007, Jones was given command of the new regiment?s 4th Battalion.

?As a nation we are asking a great deal of our young soldiers,? Jones has said. ?They face a level of danger that has been absent from British society for decades.?

Brig Jones was appointed MBE in the 2001 Queen's Birthday Honours. His elder brother, David, also joined the army but left for a career in business. Their mother, Sara, 70, has been appointed a CBE for her work for forces charities.
