'Pitch' event will take place thanks to student record label | Daily ...

Five of Five Music Entertainment, a student-driven record label on Cal State Northridge?s campus, is holding a talent search and running a showcase on Nov. 7 called ?The Pitch? to find their new band of the year.

Five of Five have accepted band applications through their website from bands interested in an opportunity to sign a deal with their record label. Each band was required to submit three songs, a short biography, two current photos, and contact information. Anyone could apply, whether they have CSUN students or not.

The top three bands, chosen by the co-producers and announced via Facebook, will perform at the showcase to win the votes of audience and executives. Junior Marcee Fitzpatrick, 23, a music industries student and co-executive producer of Five of Five Studios, said the winner will receive the support of the recording studio along with a few perks.

?This year we are facilitating a music video, a cd release party, a portfolio, physical and electronic press kits in addition to representation,? said Fitzpatrick. ?We encourage all bands of all genres and ages to apply.?

The independent record label was founded by Joel Leach, a music professor, in 1997. Carey Christensen, music industries professor at CSUN, re-branded the label in 2011 and wanted to create a work atmosphere for students by giving them the opportunity to professionally represent a band.

The process develops through a yearlong course where students are given leadership and team position within the following departments:? production, marketing, artist management, and events. Five of Five has spent the semester hunting through Southern California, searching for talent in the streets.

According to Fitzpatrick, the record label?s main goal is to ?discover and develop? amateur bands into professionals. The history behind the studio?s name is based on a similar music theory. ?Five of Five? is a musical term that refers to a chord, transitioning from one key to another.

Billy Lawler, 24, a music studies major and a member of the industry marketing team for Five of Five, compares this process to this similar theory. Lawler explains it as a pivot point for the bands. Just as the keys transition, the bands shift from amateurs to professionals.

A good example of this transformation is last year?s winner, Monroe. The band performed at the Big Show this October with the chance to open for hip-hop artist Big Sean.

Co-producers Fitzpatrick and McElver also mentioned their philanthropic plans for the upcoming semester. Once a winner is chosen, they will begin collaborating with the band to plan possible benefit concerts and fundraisers to donate artist proceeds to raising social awareness.

According to Garrett McElver, 25, a senior majoring in music industries and the co-producer of Five of Five Music Entertainment, this year?s event will be much bigger than last time.

?We will be having a red carpet this year with a step and repeat banner in the lobby during the networking reception,? said McElver. ?Students will even be given a chance to submit their votes via text after the show.?

The event begins at 6 p.m., giving attendees a chance to network, take photos, meet professionals in the industry, mingle with the artists, and visit the clubs.Doors open at the Plaza Del Sol at 7 p.m. The event, dubbed ?The Pitch,? begins at? 7:30 p.m. at the Plaza Del Sol in the USU. Tickets are available at the Associated Students Ticket Office. Prices are $10 for general admission and $5 for students.

Indianapolis Colts v Tennessee TitansGetty Images

Titans tight end Jared Cook may want a trade, but that doesn?t mean he?s going to get one.

Titans coach Mike Munchak said he?s not interested in moving Cook, who he sees as part of the team?s plans.

?I am not going to comment on that. That is not my decision to make, but I don?t see that happening, no,? Munchak said, via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. ?I don?t see why we would do that. I don?t follow that. The agent is calling to stir the pot. This is not the time for those things.

?Jared is a big part of our team. Jared has made a lot of great catches for us this year. Jared?s our [third] leading receiver. We know for us to win games we need him making plays for us, so for me it?s not something I?ve thought about at all, so I am hoping it is not on his mind either.?

What may be on his mind, and the mind of his agent, is that he?s entering the final year of his rookie deal, and it?s time to get paid.

But playing time is also a factor, as Cook has been on the field for fewer than 50 percent of the Titans offensive snaps in six of eight games, including two he was limited in because of a shoulder injury.

Munchak said they want to get him more involved, which could help smooth things over.

?We are all frustrated. I am frustrated, too. I hope everyone is frustrated. I hope we all think we can do more, because we all can do more, every one of us, the coaching staff on down. We?re 3-5, and that?s not good enough. And that includes every one of us,? Munchak said. ?Frustration means work your way through it and let?s find a way to turn this around and get to 5-5, that is where the frustration should be used.?

Cook has 28 catches for 373 yards and two touchdowns, a similar pace to last year?s 49-759-3 line. Since the beginning of 2011, only Rob Gronkowski has more receiving yards by a tight end.

Boys are more likely than girls to abuse over-the-counter drugs

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? As crackdowns get tougher on alcohol, tobacco sales, and illicit drugs, there's a growing trend among youth to turn to another source to get a high: their parent's medicine cabinet. A new University of Cincinnati study suggests adolescent males are at a higher risk of reporting longtime use of over-the-counter drugs, compared with their female peers.

Early results of the study by Rebecca Vidourek, a UC assistant professor of health promotion, and Keith King, a University of Cincinnati professor of health promotion, will be presented on Oct. 29, at the 140th annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in San Francisco.

The study examined over-the-counter (OTC) drug use among 7th-12th grade students in 133 schools across Greater Cincinnati. The data was collected by the Coalition for a Drug Free Greater Cincinnati as part of the 2009-2010 Pride Survey on adolescent drug use in America. The survey was distributed to more than 54,000 students.

Early analysis found that 10 percent of the students reported abusing over-the-counter drugs. "Findings from this study highlight and underscore OTC drugs as an increasing and significant health issue affecting young people," says Vidourek, who adds that commonly abused OTC medications include cough syrup containing Dextromethorphan (DXM), and decongestants. The researchers say that high rates of OTC use were also found among male and female junior high school students.

Vidourek says that OTC abuse can result in unintentional poisoning, seizures and physical and psychological addictions.

The researchers say that youth who reported involvement in positive activities, such as school clubs, sports, community and church organizations, were less likely to report abusing OTC medications. Teens more likely to report taking OTC drugs were also more likely to report that they had attended parties with the drugs or had friends who abused OTC drugs.

The Pride Survey is a national survey that provides an independent assessment of adolescent drug use, violence and other behaviors. The Coalition for a Drug-Free Greater Cincinnati promotes drug-free environments for youth by enhancing partnerships to educate, advocate and support locally-based, community mobilization.

The American Public Health Association is the oldest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world and is dedicated to improving public health.

Obama Ad Calls Romney Out on His Automotive Industry Lies ...

Detroit

Mitt Romney put out an ad implying that Chrysler is moving U.S. jobs to China.

Writes Business Insider:

The claim is completely misleading and false, and provoked an outcry from Democrats and reporters . The report, from Bloomberg, actually said that Chrysler is talking about adding Jeep production in China in order to serve the Chinese market. Jeep production in North America would continue unchanged.

The claim is completely misleading and false, and provoked an outcry from Democrats and reporters . The report, from Bloomberg, actually said that Chrysler is talking about adding Jeep production in China in order to serve the Chinese market. Jeep production in North America would continue unchanged.

But despite the fact that Romney's claim was demonstrably wrong, his campaign is doubling down in the new ad, which went on air this weekend in Ohio.

The Obama campaign fires back at Romney's "lie" with a new ad.

When the auto industry faced collapse, Mitt Romney turned his back. Even the conservative Detroit News criticized Romney for his 'wrong-headedness' on the bailout. And now, after Romney's false claim of Jeep outsourcing to China, Chrysler itself has refuted Romney's lie. The truth? Jeep is adding jobs in Ohio.

ONTD_Political - So much for ?family values?

(Trigger Warning: Child Abuse)

I grew up in the kind of traditional, two-person home that the Republicans glorify. And it was hell

BY LAURA BOGART

My father asks me what four times four is, and all I can think is ?eight,? though I know that?s wrong; whether it?s better ? safer ? to be wrong or to say, ?I don?t know,? depends upon his mood. The way my mother smiles at me as she clears my plate is of no help, there?s no telltale tightness in her eyes. He drums the flashcard against the tabletop and sighs. My fingers worry the edges of the iron-on patches ? a rabbit and a duck ? that Mom has fixed to my corduroy jumper. I gamble on ?eight,? but a yawn slips out instead. I haven?t even closed my mouth before he smacks it open again. He backhands me hard enough to blot out the world.

The family at the kitchen table is an indelible image, classic Americana. It sells pancakes and life insurance, and every four years, it peddles politicians. Each election cycle, the steely female narrators of campaign ads ask us to consider which candidate is best for American families, families that might?ve looked like mine until my father?s hand left me deaf and reeling for days.

I grew up in the kind of two-parent, father-makes-the-bacon, mother-fries-it-up home that Mitt Romney waxed ecstatic about when fielding a debate question on gun violence: ?We need moms and dads helping raise kids ? to tell our kids that before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone ? that?s a great idea because if there?s a two-parent family, the prospect of living in poverty goes down dramatically.?

Our house had a parking pad and a fenced-in yard, it was near the best public schools in the county, and a quick drive from a park called ?Honeygo,? a word that forces you to smile when you say it. Inside that house, with Sears family portraits from every Christmas leading up the staircase and my trophies on the mantel, a flattened hand was a mercy. I?d taken fists to the face for spilling my milk. When I clogged the toilet, he whipped me with his belt so hard and so fast that the buckle flew off.

Before that debate even ended, my Facebook friends erupted with barbs and anecdotes about the productive lives they lead as non-spree shooters despite (or because of) being raised by single mothers. I wish I had those stories to tell ? not memories to relive in therapists? offices or scars to explain to my lovers. My mother never had the guts to strike out on her own.

As a girl, she?d been sold a bill of goods about the good life: a man who wore a tie to work and a house in a ZIP code full of supermarkets and malls and people who looked just like her; a daughter who?d earn a degree or two and, for a time, an impressive title ? until, of course, she met her own man in a gray flannel suit. She wasn?t told what to do when the man who owns the roof over her head slams her into a wall.

Every election cycle becomes a dire exegesis of ?family values,? a neurotic fixation on the nuclear family: ?Father Knows Best,? Mommie Dearest? and ?Baby Makes Three? (or Four, or even Five) have become the icons of a bygone era ? a postwar wonderland that boomed with prosperity in the shadow of the mushroom cloud.

It may have been the era of unlocked doors, but it was still the America where my father?s father beat him unconscious and my mother couldn?t have girlfriends sleep over ? not because she feared a father who might come home rip-roaring drunk and ready to fight ? simply because there was no father in the home. Only a mother who worked two jobs to keep her fed and still sewed all her clothes, a mother who told her to never tell anyone that Papa left them, to say, instead, that he?d died in Korea.

So, when Florida Sen. Marco Rubio stood in front of the Republican National Convention and said that, ?We?re bound together by common values. That family is the most important institution in society. That almighty God is the source of all we have.?

I wondered if he could even begin to imagine that rapturous ache of pressing his thumb into a bruise, just to feel something, anything, other than the swell of panic that can rise hours, even days, after the air in the room ? and his father?s mood ? has stilled.

When I?ve asked my mother why she didn?t leave my father, she tells me that she wanted me to have what she didn?t: a father. A shared surname was a greater balm than any ointment she could smooth along my savaged back or over her swollen eyes. Being a housewife, a soother of moods, seemed nobler to her than being like her own mother ? the woman who wore her pantyhose to bed, just for a few extra moments of sleep between shifts; she may not have cooked dinner every night, but she kept them from starving.

My grandmother needed equal wages; she needed help with childcare, not a boss who?d let her off in time to start the roast. Yet, when a young voter asked Gov. Romney about equal pay for equal work, he responded with a back-patting soliloquy about making sure his chief of staff was always home to make supper for her kids. When Ann Romney took the stage at the RNC, she crowed, ?I love you, women!? But the women she described as the backbone of America were mothers and wives, sisters and daughters. This backbone is more like Adam?s rib: women purely in relation to men.

Moms and dads: Gov. Romney laid the peace and prosperity of the nation at the feet of moms and dads. But in his party?s platform, there?s no room, no hope for moms who love other moms, dads who love other dads. And his statements are, by and large, the most benign: The Maryland Marriage Alliance, a group ferociously devoted to defeating the marriage equality bill on my home state?s ballot, proclaims, on its website, that ?such a paradigm shift says to children that mothers and fathers don?t matter (especially fathers) ? any two ?parents? will do.?

As if the parents we were born to weren?t always a matter of happenstance: an elbow jostled at a bar, a muscular hand smoothing the hair away from a blue-shadowed eye, a quick decision that this girl looks hot or that guy seems safe. We are never guaranteed that the people who fit together so deliciously in the heat of a moment can building a lasting love. And it is love, the breadth and force of being wholly, unabashedly loved ? not just having two parents who look like the wax figures on a wedding cake ? that affirms and redeems us. Poverty alone doesn?t always spark violence. And a two-parent home isn?t always the antidote. The urge to obliterate is as dark and unknowable as the hollows of our bones.

Family, for me, is not a bedrock. It?s the hole I?ve crawled out. When I see Facebook friends in wedding gowns, or cradling their newborns, I don?t feel wistful; there?s no twinge of envy ? only the breathless pain of a knife driven deep and twisted hard. I imagine it?s the same pain my father felt when the woman he?d been dating for six months told him, over dinner, that she was pregnant.

His cohort of men was raised to believe that doing ?the right thing? meant knuckling under and buying a ring. They were taught that if they put food on the table, they?d never have to swallow their anger. Providing was enough, until it wasn?t. And it never is. My father wanted a life bigger than the yard he mowed. He made us pay for everything our presence cheated him of.

Whenever I need to forgive him, which happens more often as I grow older, I remember the moment he was most proud of me, when a self-portrait I?d done was selected for a state-wide high school art show in the governor?s mansion. The portrait bore my features ? the nose that never healed cleanly from a break and still slopes to the right; my father?s eyes and my mother?s mouth ? but it was too pretty to be me. It?d been done for a grade, all soft angles and immaculate lighting and as we walked away from it, my father put his arm around my shoulder. As a child, I?d craved his touch as much as I?d feared it; by the time I was a teenager, we were enemy combatants forced to share a neutral country: I?d earned the luxury of being surprised by the weight of his hand.

?It?s good that you have something you love,? he said. He spoke with a hangdog guilelessness that conjured the few photographs of him as a boy: A butterball in a Little League uniform, a cowboy costume, a pair of Levis with rolled cuffs.

I will never know what that little boy wanted to be when he grew up, and I doubt that my father can bear to remember. My mother will never get to be a teacher, which is what she?d wanted when she was a little girl in a hand-sewn jumper; my grandmother would only pay for a typing course.

Still, everything I have in life ? a job my father can brag about and an apartment my mother says is ?cute, for a single girl? ? and everything I?ve become ? writer, activist, friend ? is not always because of them, it?s often despite them, despite their best intentions, despite everything they were told to be.

My family was never part of the 47 percent Mitt Romney derided for being ?dependent on government.? We never wanted for healthcare, for food or for housing ? but we were victims. All the hashtags and memes about bayonets and binders full of women serve a purpose, but they can never encapsulate the madness of insisting that rape ? if it results in motherhood ? is a blessing. The crushing conformity of family first ? and at any cost ? will make victims of us all: the woman forced to relive the worst night of her life every time she feels the baby kick; the man who has always wanted to be a father, but never will because of whom he loves; and the little girl at the kitchen table who must choose ?eight? or ?I don?t know.?

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Police say a bomb has exploded outside the shrine of a Sunni Muslim saint in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least two people.

Police officer Zahid Ullah says 25 people were also wounded in Sunday's attack at the shrine of Kaka Sahib in the town of Nowshehra.

Improve Your Style With These Great Fashion Tips

Never simply throw piles of jewelry in a box. This does damage to jewelry pieces, which are
often fragile. Necklaces lumped together can get tangled up into a knotted ball.

Sometimes it is very cost effective to purchase a piece of jewelry that has been previously
owned. You can often find pre-owned jewelry in fantastic like-new condition, but at a fraction
of the cost.

Selling jewelry online requires you to capture stunning images of the piece. This is
particularly important when selling jewelry online, since the buyer can't inspect the piece in
person. Be sure your photographs show good details of the jewelry and few, if any, details of
the surroundings.

When you set out to buy jewelry, buy a piece because you love it, not because of who makes
it. Few people can identify jewelry brands on sight. A jeweler who convinces you that a brand
is worth paying more for is probably just out to get as much of your money as possible. There
are several high quality brands.

If you cannot afford a piece of jewelry that you like, you can have a replica specially made.
Often all that is necessary is a photograph of the piece of jewelry you want. Bring the picture
to a jeweler and describe what you would like. They have the capacity and the materials on
hand to plate the new pieces and provide your finished piece at considerable savings.

It is crucial that all bracelets and necklaces have good clasps. Without a solid clasp, your
pendant, chain or expensive stone is at risk for loss. Anytime you buy an expensive bracelet
or necklace it is recommended you request a safety clasp. There are those that use two or
three clasps to keep their jewelry safe while they wear it.

When you are selecting a piece of jewelry to complement your outfit, you need to consider
what you want your jewelry to do. Is your outfit or the jewelry making the statement, meaning
is your jewelry going to be front and center, or is it going to be more subtle and in the
background complementing the outfit?

Clean your jewelry with a soft, moist cloth to prevent damage to the setting. After wiping the
item clean, wipe it dry with a soft cloth. Avoid using steam cleaners or harsh chemicals with
fashion or costume jewelry.

To help maintain its appearance, take good care of it to keep it from getting tarnished.
Remove your jewelry if you plan on spending time in or near water. If you let some metals get
wet too often, they can tarnish, rust or become dull. If you are looking to protect your jewelry
from the ill effects of water, try applying clear nail polish, just a thin layer, on the piece itself.

Beautiful rings can be overshadowed by uncared for hands, so it is important to treat your
hands well. Keep your nails manicured with polish that pops to complement the bling on your
fingers.

The price, style, color, material, occasion - there is so much to think about when selecting
jewelry that it can easily become overwhelming. With any luck, the information from this
article will be very useful as you set out to explore different types and styles of jewelry.

With greenhouse warming, rainfall in the South Pacific islands will depend on two competing effects an increase due to overall warming and a decrease due to changes in atmospheric water transport according to a study by an international team of scientists around Matthew Widlansky and Axel Timmermann at the International Pacific Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa. In the South Pacific, the study shows, these two effects sometimes cancel each other out, resulting in highly uncertain rainfall projections. Results of the study are published in the 28 October online issue of Nature Climate Change.

The largest rainband in the Southern Hemisphere the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) is the main source of rainfall for South Pacific island nations. Changes in this rainfall band would have severe consequences for the vulnerable island nations already having to adapt to accelerating sea level rise. Yet, very little is known about how this 8,000-km-long climate feature will respond to greenhouse warming.

"One reason why the SPCZ projections are so elusive is that many climate models are notoriously poor in simulating this important rainband, even under present-day climate conditions," says Postdoctoral Fellow Widlansky at the International Pacific Research Center. "We were able to overcome some model shortcomings in simulating South Pacific climate by removing model deviations from observed sea surface temperatures."

With the resulting improvements in climate model performance, Widlansky, Timmermann, and colleagues could identify two competing mechanisms affecting rainfall trends in the South Pacific.

"We have known for some time that rising tropical temperatures will lead to more water vapor in the atmosphere," explains Timmermann, professor of oceanography at the International Pacific Research Center and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. "Abundant moisture tends to bring about heavier rainfall in regions of converging winds such as the SPCZ." Scientists refer to this as the "wet gets wetter" climate change mechanism.

"Nearly all climate change model simulations, however, suggest the equatorial Pacific will warm faster than the SPCZ region. This uneven warming is likely to pull the rainband away from its normal position, causing drying in the Southwest Pacific and more equatorial rainfall," Timmerman goes on to say. The study refers to this as the "warmest gets wetter" mechanism.

Widlansky adds, "When we evaluated the latest climate change experiments being conducted by international climate modeling groups, we saw that these competing mechanisms are the cause for uncertainty in the SPCZ rainfall projections."

The scientists found that depending upon the degree of tropical warming expected this century, one or the other mechanism is more likely to win out. With moderate warming, weaker sea surface temperature gradients are likely to shift the rainband towards the equator, potentially causing drying during summer for most Southwest Pacific island nations. For much higher warming possible by the end of this century, the net effect of the opposing mechanisms is likely a shift towards more rainfall for the South Pacific islands.

"To be more definite in our projections, however, we need more extensive observations in the South Pacific of how clouds and rainfall form and how they respond to such climate phenomena as El Nio. Before we have more confidence in our calculations of the delicate balance between the two climate change mechanisms, we need to be able to simulate cloud formations more realistically," says Timmermann.

Romney woos Florida early vote; Obama eyes N.H.

LAND O'LAKES, Fla. (AP) ? Juggling politics and storm preparations, Mitt Romney dangled a plea for bipartisanship before early voters in Florida on Saturday as Barack Obama worked to nail down tiny New Hampshire's four electoral votes. Both campaigns scrambled to steer clear of a most unlikely October surprise, a superstorm barreling up the East Coast.

With just 10 days left in an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy had both campaigns ripping up carefully mapped-out itineraries as they worked to maximize voter turnout and avoid any suggestion that they were putting politics ahead of public safety.

The campaigns pressed every possible angle in search of advantage ? even paying attention to punctuation.

Obama's campaign signs for months have said: "Forward." Now they say: "Forward!"

Romney, who has been striking a more moderate tone as he courts women and independents in the campaign's home stretch, campaigned across Florida with a pledge to "build bridges" with the other party.

He coupled that message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision. Noting that Obama supporters like to chant "four more years" at the president's campaign rallies, Romney picked up on his crowd's own chant at the Pensacola Civic Center and said: "I like '10 more days' a lot better."

His warm-up act was more biting: Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told the crowd that Obama was advancing "the ideas of countries that people come here to get away from." Pressed later on what countries he was referring to, Rubio said, "any big-government country in the world" and specifically referred to Mexico and Latin America.

Obama hauled his campaign to New Hampshire, where he told volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester that: "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

It takes 270 electoral votes to win the election. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that are too close to call, New Hampshire among them.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees as governor of neighboring Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama told a crowd of 8,500 gathered at an outdoor rally on an unseasonably warm October day.

The president said Romney even raised fees in Massachusetts on obtaining a birth certificate, "which would have been expensive for me." It was a veiled reference to opponents of the president who have incorrectly said he was born outside the United States. Copies of his birth certificate have been in high demand.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four battleground states: North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Romney scrapped plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. At a rally in Kissimee, Fla., he urged supporters to keep those in the storm's path "in your mind and in your hearts."

"You know how tough hurricanes can be," he told the Floridians.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow local officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns.

But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland. Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. They "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

Plans for son Beau Biden, the Delaware attorney general, to join his father in Virginia were scrapped when he was called up by the National Guard to help with the storm.

None of Obama's campaign stops had been canceled, but he did adjust move up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm.

En route to New Hampshire, Obama held an airborne conference call with administration officials about the federal government's role in minimizing storm damage and a ensuring speedy recovery effort.

Campaign spokesman Jennifer Psaki said the Obama team was continuing to promote early voting as something that provides flexibility for busy families, but she added that with the storm headed for shore, "safety comes first, and that's the case with early voting as well."

Romney's trip to Florida, with three events across the state, was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state that went for Obama four years ago and where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs this time. Both campaigns already have been working furiously to gain the advantage in the state's vote-by-mail program, an area where Republicans typically have been stronger.

"I need you to vote early!" Romney told supporters in Land O'Lakes.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan worked his way across rainy, chilly Ohio, on a two-day bus trip, with his family in tow. At a factory in New Philadelphia, Ryan stressed the hit that manufacturing industries have taken over the last four years and promised more coal jobs, natural gas jobs and increased military spending if Romney is elected.

Speaking to more than 1,000 supporters on the factory floor at Gradall Industries, Ryan told voters: "You know it's you. You know what you have in front of you. You know your responsibility."

Campaign 2012 was serious business, with so little time left and the storm complicating the end game, but Ryan's children helped to lighten the tone. His 7-, 9- and 10-year-olds scampered between parts bins and heavy chains at the factory.

Nine-year-old Charlie waved the peace sign and mugged for cameras, prompting his mother, Janna Ryan, to shake her head and declare, "I don't know where he gets it. It's kind of crazy."

During a later stop at a bakery in Circleville, Ohio, 10-year-old daughter Liz told the bakery clerk that her dad was "sugar-free except for doughnuts and ice cream."

"And apple-fritters," Ryan agreed.

Obama, for his part, made a stop at the Common Man Merrimack, a restaurant where he toasted patrons with a Common Man Ale, saying: "To voting. To America. Doesn't matter what party."

The campaigns and their allies kept up a steady stream of TV and radio ads in the battleground states. The right-leaning Americans for Job Security made a rare purchase of Philadelphia airtime, amounting to $1.2 million, for pro-Romney ads. While a few independent groups have tried to make Pennsylvania competitive for Romney, neither Obama nor Romney has devoted ad resources to the state, which is expected to go for Obama.

Westmead Hawk, the first animal athlete to have a waxwork at Madam Tussauds

Standing at par with the legendary greyhound, Mick the Miller, and the horse, Red Rum is Sonic Flight?s son, Westmead Hawk. He has been one of the hounds who was able to win the most prestigious English Greyhound Derby back-to-back, first in 2005 and then in 2006.

He was entered as the 5 to 4 shot for the 2005 Derby, and had drawn the fourth trap to break from. His quizzical approach to the distance saw him bursting into speed only on the final turn and dodge the leader, Blonde Mac, by 1 ? lengths. He timed the track distance in 28.56 seconds.

After bringing in the lucrative prize money of the English Derby, the connections had in mind for him the Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park in the same year. Not measuring up to the previous Derby?s performance, he lost the race to a fifth position.

By the next season, the black hound was charged for the agenda of posting another English Greyhound Derby success. After dealing with the five qualifying rounds unscratched, he was entered as the most popular candidate for the final.

Making up the most of the same racing pattern as last year, he kept the eventual outcome a surprise for the highly hopeful connections and the crowds. ?

He followed in the pace set by, Mineola Farloe, and monopolised on the chances by the final two bends. Concluding the race by the very narrow margin of ? of a length, he got his name against the three other dogs who had won the English Derby more than once.

The endangered sport that was and is struggling for survival cannot forget the sincere contributions of the Charlie Lister trained time and again. Both the trainee and the handler are truly a blessing for the prosperity of the sport.

Lord David Lipsey, the Chairman of the British Greyhound Racing Board stated:

"We launched a five-year plan for the rejuvenation of the sport this year but Westmead Hawk is doing more to encourage people to come racing than anything us humans could do! He is a canine Red Rum."

The Bob Morton owned soon bid farewell to the career due to an injury, but has left some really overwhelming moments for the fans to cherish for years to come.

Westmead Hawk became the first animal athlete to have a waxwork at Madam Tussauds.

Kane County Chronicle | Pheasant Run Resort to host car auction

ST. CHARLES ? Whether buyers spend $10,000 to $15,000 on a car to enjoy on cruise nights or hundreds of thousands of dollars on a higher investment, Sam Murtaugh said the Mecum 2012 Fall Premier Auction in St. Charles this week will have it all.

?It?s basically a huge car show where everything is for sale,? he said.

Murtaugh is the marketing director for Wisconsin-based Mecum Auctions, a company that specializes in the sale of collector cars, offering more than 12,000 vehicles a year.

Today begins Mecum?s annual three-day auction at Pheasant Run Resort ? a location Murtaugh said gives out-of-town attendees an opportunity to take in one of Chicago?s ?premier suburbs.?

Gates open daily at 8 a.m. The auction begins at 1 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. It will be broadcast live on Velocity, a men?s cable network, on Friday and Saturday.

People can register to bid on site; there is a $100 bidder registration fee. Admission is $15 a day and free for children 12 and younger.

?We?re a real family-oriented company,? Murtaugh said.

This year?s auction will feature about 1,000 vehicles, he said. Typically, about 70 to 75 percent of the cars sell.

A 1954 Chevrolet Corvette drag car known as ?The Pizza Man? is headlining the auction. Earl Britt, the owner and driver, raced it across the Midwest and at national events from 1962 to 1971, earning it the title of ?World?s Fastest Six Cylinder Corvette.?

Chicago area collector Mike Guarise will offer his collection of ?Red Cover Girls? ? classic GM red muscle cars from 1970 that appeared on magazine covers.

A catalog of the vehicles is available at www.mecum.com. There, people also can sign up to access the sales results, Murtaugh said.

?People like to follow along,? he said, adding some treat it as a guessing game while others use the information to determine what their car might be worth.

ADP making changes to monthly employment report - WAFB 9 News ...

ROSELAND, N.J. (AP) - Automatic Data Processing Inc. is making some changes to its monthly U.S. employment report, including adding more industry categories.

The report will now increase to five industries from three industries. The five industries - construction, financial activities, manufacturing, professional and business services and trade, transportation and utilities - make up more than 50 percent of all U.S. private sector employment, according to ADP.

The company said Wednesday that the number of business sizes on the ADP National Employment Report will also be expanded to five company-size classes from three company-size classes. A new methodology that will better align with the final, revised U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers will be implemented as well, ADP said. In addition, the sample size used to create the report is being increased.

ADP, which is based in Roseland, N.J., said that it will no longer team with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC on the report. The companies, which had worked together for six years, said that their collaboration ended amicably. ADP will now work on the report with Moody's Analytics, an economic forecasts provider.

The ADP National Employment Report initially began in 2006 and is derived from actual payroll data from a subset of ADP's clients in the U.S. ADP doesn't identify which companies are in the subset.

The first monthly report issued in partnership with Moody's will be released on Nov. 1. It will report private payroll changes for October.
