DeKalb County businesses are being sought to promote job opportunities at their companies and highlight careers in their industries for area students.
For the first time ever, local employers will be able to promote their companies to students as they consider careers and select education and training programs. This tool will be available to adults as they consider new careers and job opportunities.
Kishwaukee College has partnered with school districts in DeKalb and Ogle counties to make Kish Career Link career development software available to students. More than 4,000 students at these schools currently use this online program to identify careers and to outline education and training programs required to prepare for these occupations. Hundreds of job seekers also use the program to identify new careers options.
What?s been missing, but now can be made available, are local employment opportunities and company profiles to encourage career aspirants. By investing in the sponsorship of the Kish Career Link local employer module, DeKalb County businesses can promote careers at their firms and participate in a variety of career development activities to engage candidates. These activities can include: mentoring, guest speaking, company tours, job shadowing, internships and summer part-time employment.
The cost of this software license for businesses in the Kishwaukee College district is $25,000 per year. A three-year commitment is required. Rochelle area businesses in Ogle County have pledged $12,000. DeKalb County businesses need only pledge $13,000 per year for three years to secure this valuable workforce development outreach tool. Ideal Industries, KishHealth System, CST Storage and Driv-Lok have already agreed to support this program.
DeKalb County has seen recent growth in manufacturing, warehousing and distribution and health care. In addition, skilled workers in these industries will be approaching retirement in the coming years. To ensure that students and adults are prepared to fulfill these needs, Kishwaukee College has sponsored a student module for the past three years.
With students and job seekers now familiar with Career Cruising Kish Career Link, the time is right for employers to make students and job seekers aware of their business products and services and the exciting and rewarding careers available at their firms.
DCEDC will distribute sponsorship requests on behalf of Kish Career Link for the benefit of the DeKalb County business community. Interested companies can contact Michelle Allen at the Kishwaukee College Employment Resources Center at 815-825-2086, ext. 4080, or michelle.allen@kishwaukeecollege.edu.

Freelance photographer Austin Tice, seen in this July 2012 picture taken at an undisclosed location, has been missing since Aug. 13.
By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News
The U.S. believes missing American journalist Austin Tice is in the hands of the Syrian government, a State Department spokeswoman said,?after a YouTube emerged purporting to show him at the hands of his captors.
Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters Monday that the State Department was unable to verify the accuracy of the video, which appears to shows Tice with masked men that one expert described as a "caricature of a jihadi group."
Nuland said that the video ?may have been staged? and added, ?There?s a lot of reason for the Syrian Government to duck responsibility, but we continue to believe that, to the best of our knowledge, we think he is in Syrian Government custody."

The battle for Aleppo: My 18 days with the Syrian rebels
Former U.S. Marine Tice, who worked for outlets including The Washington Post and media group McClatchy Newspapers, has been missing in Syria since Aug. 13.
He posted on Twitter on Aug. 11 saying he had been celebrating his birthday with Syrian rebels.
McClatchy reported on its website Monday that Tice was ?alive and in the custody of armed men? and quoted Tice?s parents, Marc and Debra, as saying the video was ?reassuring.?
It quoted a statement from the Houston couple saying:
?Though it is difficult to see our son in such a setting and situation as that depicted in the video, it is reassuring that he appears to be unharmed. It is evident that the current events in Syria are challenging and difficult for everyone involved. Our wish is that peace and stability can once again return to the people of Syria and that our eldest son, Austin, will soon be safely returned to our family.?
The video clip, which shows masked men carrying guns, came to light after it was shared on a Facebook page associated with supporters of the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

NBC News could not confirm the authenticity of the video.?The New York Times reported that several analysts expressed doubts about the authenticity of the video.
The Washington Post also quoted Joseph Holliday, of the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, as saying the video did not ring true and that the "captors" appeared to be wearing Afghan-style clothing rather than those normally associated with Islamists in Syria.
?It?s like a caricature of a jihadi group,? he told the newspaper. ?It looks like someone went to the Internet, watched pictures of Afghan mujaheddin, then copied them. My gut instinct is that regime security guys dressed up like a bunch of wahoos and dragged him around and released the video to scare the U.S. and others about the danger of al-Qaida extremists in Syria. It would fit their narrative perfectly.?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A new study has outlined for the first time a biological mechanism by which zinc deficiency can develop with age, leading to a decline of the immune system and increased inflammation associated with many health problems, including cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disease and diabetes.
The research was done by scientists in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University and the OSU College of Public Health and Human Sciences. It suggests that it's especially important for elderly people to get adequate dietary intake of zinc, since they may need more of it at this life stage when their ability to absorb it is declining.
About 40 percent of elderly Americans and as many as two billion people around the world have diets that are deficient in this important, but often underappreciated micronutrient, experts say.
The study was published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, based on findings with laboratory animals. It found that zinc transporters were significantly dysregulated in old animals. They showed signs of zinc deficiency and had an enhanced inflammatory response even though their diet supposedly contained adequate amounts of zinc.
When the animals were given about 10 times their dietary requirement for zinc, the biomarkers of inflammation were restored to those of young animals.
"The elderly are the fastest growing population in the U.S. and are highly vulnerable to zinc deficiency," said Emily Ho, an LPI principal investigator. "They don't consume enough of this nutrient and don't absorb it very well."
"We've previously shown in both animal and human studies that zinc deficiency can cause DNA damage, and this new work shows how it can help lead to systemic inflammation," Ho said.
"Some inflammation is normal, a part of immune defense, wound healing and other functions," she said. "But in excess, it's been associated with almost every degenerative disease you can think of, including cancer and heart disease. It appears to be a significant factor in the diseases that most people die from."
As a result of this and what is now know about zinc absorption in the elderly, Ho said that she would recommend all senior citizens take a dietary supplement that includes the full RDA for zinc, which is 11 milligrams a day for men and 8 milligrams for women. Zinc can be obtained in the diet from seafood and meats, but it's more difficult to absorb from grains and vegetables -- a particular concern for vegetarians.
"We found that the mechanisms to transport zinc are disrupted by age-related epigenetic changes," said Carmen Wong, an OSU research associate and co-author of this study. "This can cause an increase in DNA methylation and histone modifications that are related to disease processes, especially cancer. Immune system cells are also particularly vulnerable to zinc deficiency."
Research at OSU and elsewhere has shown that zinc is essential to protect against oxidative stress and help repair DNA damage. In zinc deficiency, the risk of which has been shown to increase with age, the body's ability to repair genetic damage may be decreasing even as the amount of damage is going up.
Medical tests to determine zinc deficiency are rarely done, scientists say, and are not particularly accurate even if they are done. The best approach is to assure adequate intake of the nutrient through diet or supplements, they said, especially in the elderly.
Even though elderly people have less success in absorbing zinc, the official RDA for them is the same as in younger adults. That issue should be examined more closely, Ho said.
Levels of zinc intake above 40 milligrams per day should be avoided, researchers said, because at very high levels they can interfere with absorption of other necessary nutrients, including iron and copper.
These studies were supported by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.
