And if it's Saturday must be mustard and Johnson here on this glorious. Glorious weekend day. Pretty glorious night for the New England Patriots. To employ a little hyperbole after all it is. Pre season game number one -- the first time in almost two months. New England fans get a chance to see something other than the Red Sox play a baseball game what it's been since early may Celtics were ushered out in the first round of the NBA playoffs. We know what happened the Bruins in game number six in the Stanley Cup finals against the Blackhawks Red Sox have been. Operating pretty much at the top of the AL east but they've been stumbling just a little bit they lost last night but boy out yeah. What are no aces in that summer sports desert. Patriots get on the football field not a real game but will take your pre season win against the Phillies last night the Phillies the Eagles last night. In Philadelphia your impressions mr. Johnson. I'm amazed you're starting -- for an exhibition game over a regular season game that really counts. Are just so anxious to finally CV yeah patriots out of their last night and see -- performing in Tom Brady looks as good as they've been saying in training camp he is. Razor. -- -- dole. Wide receiver undrafted out of Cincinnati's 25 and the fighting is productivity is he's number 85 so the first army -- the brawl I go back to -- or an arms and -- our -- I gradually got the ball. He had four catches before you can blink your rise. Very impressed with him. Army's family Garrick. Blunt is gonna force some people to may be re evaluate their rosters that your version. At two touchdowns last night had a reverse play. I didn't know we had that kind of speed -- troop it you know to bring to one side he was trapped and he cut back around the other side and down at two touchdowns he's on Boris. What you did look like in comparison to what you did lighten up about Tim Tebow. My indoor Paris thinking about him -- I know people are gonna say. I mean he had a 49 quarterback rating. He what does that exactly mean by the waist and it just I don't know resistance combination of his accuracy his production in note. Neither team -- and deception which I thought was interesting but it. What's amazing to me about Tebow was for guys to play that long and college and in the -- for three different teams. -- he simply can't throw the football end. I know people -- say yeah but you know we look at the in look at the united she got from running the ball and he's a horse and you can use a money option. In you know what -- I give you that I have a Tebow was four for twelve. At fifty for a 31 yards rush. Thinks they can look at him -- I think you should make the team yeah I I really don't I think he is a quote on quote. -- ball player he is big he he's a little bit elusive and we hear you push him or do you try obviously to America play -- -- -- on the table now. But I think he he's he's good enough athletically. That you can put him in certain situations. And I think he could he could LP team he's a competitor he's a hard worker. His passing comes down to this indifference toward artists are troublesome cricket is Thomas humorous. A man of great faith that he is in the Bible defines face is the substance of things hoped for. The evidence of things not yet seen in in his case. No seriously in this case you can really pick out. He doesn't trust. What he sees. So we has to keep waiting. Intel guys. Really open and you hold the ball too long idiot three sacks last night amid a site from a throwing motion. He doesn't for I I I've watched him very closely last night he doesn't trust what he -- Where is that played it Brady made. That touchdown pass that Brady made in the corner of the end zone. That's one of those trust plays where you have to just put it a certain spot. In pressure receive is gonna get. Well that's the difference between a college quarterback college football player because that's what Tebow really was. As opposed to an NFL quarterback you have to trust that you have. The athletic ability the understanding of the game. You can see the feel you understand defense is as well the pro ball particular places going to be caught up by your wide receiver. Near the end of the game he -- a long passed on the left side line. Which the guys on the broadcast talked about he was very efficient that in practice I did see that in training camp I was shocked. -- how well Tebow threw the ball down on the side -- long passes thirty or forty yards. Passing got picked near the end of the game where it was. Grossly. Under thrown my question is and I think we all understand we've had this argument in many times you know one of these days and Larry's. Faith based world. Rajon Rondo is -- -- free throws. What are these days and Larry's faith based world may be Tim Tebow can be an NFL quarterback and I supported the guy a couple years ago when he played for gambler. What he's like but he throws a baseball. Apparently that the -- through a very war. He's thrown a pitch on the mound for the ceremonial but -- -- -- portables brownstone home plate throw a little lies outside is -- I guess now I said it before and I'll say it again I still think they should he should have gotten Ron Amadon. All Boomer Esiason to lefties. Them to work with him for a week or two I I just don't just acknowledge that I don't Craig. Why does it keep going you're not -- the Eagles. Ended up going -- Broccoli falls Nixon. Madonna like -- fifth stringer -- guys were -- about a Borland him. -- just. Can't I agree with the overall I don't know what people can't and I like your guy but lately he just can't grow. So outside of that he's -- is like -- -- -- really can't kick so he can't row how was boomers Ron Amadon or any other way because I'm an alias or not I'm saying of them left maybe it's -- motion problem I don't know great. I'm not a quarterback coach but. I can imagine somebody who throw whose -- left handed thrower. Might be able to help him with his motion better than than somebody who's not. Am just suggesting -- well I don't know at this point I too wouldn't you try anything. Listen I am never going to. Accuse him of being patent meaning Brady with accuracy. I'm -- approaches. Decent. In the same state. That you throw the ball. But I think part of the problem is is what -- pinpointed earlier I think he. Doesn't trust what he sees. He's got to see more. And and by that time he gets sacked you can't wait that long. Well here's the larger question I was like -- larger questions now what. Do the patriots want with Tim Tebow what is there. Over arching goal is he simply just a third string quarterback now you notice I think that. The guys in the broadcast last night brought -- particularly Paul rule which I always appreciate for his candor. -- -- -- They're running -- -- different op ads are pretty obvious about it after Mormon optional right and that's not that you're not gonna do that through the course of an NFL game -- season he's the third string quarterback behind mallet and a -- got -- last -- maybe -- commentator -- -- -- -- were on the subject required background -- didn't have me standing up doing hand -- -- businesses third year. I -- he was OK but I I was kind of disappointed and I wanted more riding him bring back Brian Hoyer I I just didn't. I didn't think much -- him -- the only guy the only guy in this has been going now for fourteen years is Tom Brady's fourteen year thirteen he's been a starter. The only guy that has ever been promoted when Brady went down in the intercourse with Matt Cassel. And remember what we set about Matt -- all horrible PRI's. In the pre season -- everybody was shaking in their boots I get rid of him how could they possibly go on -- Brady goes down they won eleven games without Brady. In 2008. I'm not sure that Ryan mallet. Necessarily is as bad as you say he has but again as might my stock response to all of this is Cassel proved me wrong that it think the patriots would fare very well without Brady you know 2008. Perhaps Ryan -- can't be the next Mac castle on the other hand. If Tom Brady goes down at this stage of all these new wide receivers how could anybody come in for Tom Brady. And have the patriots win any consistent level -- Now you could say that is that our Ali any team a loses his starting cornerback are you kidding Arafat -- look great -- -- look look five to six last night I thought he -- and Al dale I I. I just think obviously Brady is in and in -- in the light and -- is -- just head and shoulders above everybody else in Eli Manning cover maps territory. I say that Matt will allow -- giants -- in a real record viewer of your gas if you say that he lies he isn't easy and brought some things he has so many of in my hands and but it doesn't there was an enjoyable game it really was I think we're -- team it's an enjoyable game. Because you can even watch. You know late into the get in the second half and you still are injuring it because you wanna see seven the other player is. I think the picked -- of the inside. Nose tackle slash defensive and wherever they want a part of Tommy Kelly is known names worth I think he's going to be a player for them and I think he's gonna help them a lot where it will fork in the middle. So there's a lot to look at. You know. I thought it was interesting I thought I tried Belichick was really nitpicking Wikipedia with the tuck rule. He you know they're arguing with the officials about it but you know what. He turned out to get it if anybody in the history of football should be nit -- about that -- role. It might be bill bell -- right I thought about that though but that I thought about wait a minute. If he wants these guys to take these exhibition game seriously in here you have a coach out there. Fighting over something that really doesn't matter. There is a lesson to be learned there and I think there was there was a lesson he was teaching at the same time that he was opted telling them. You've got to fight for every inch are on everything that you can get it as as a football team my impression was I thought they got rid of the tuck rule in the offseason. I thought I -- true. It I don't know but it whether his arm was moving forward it it looked like he had gotten hit before I think the tuck rule is gonzo yeah maybe they Karla thought he's twelve years too late -- but I didn't I did find it interesting that he did -- I'm trying to think of anything else that that really jumped out at me aside from again Tebow running the ball. I got that safety -- com and you really if you blink like keep Heatley are all these guys -- -- will be people in and out every five minutes right. You look like you know like a younger. Player in the middle of everything and every time we turnaround he was out there and in right in that zone area there right you know where where they usually complete -- dump passes so. He was impressive I get I think we said Tompkins. Was impressive in Vereen. Brings a different skill set to the table he's bigger Indies fast but he's also got great. -- has saw McCord yeah our house at great pass great catch so maybe he can take a little bit loses staying awful problem. You know Welker being gone -- what this when it comes down to him. The -- I think we all understand Tom Brady's still Tom Brady he's virtually ageless he's a very young 36 in spite of takes care of himself takes care of himself he looks young he plays young. He's got plenty of mileage. Left. The big question is in in that role again. The AFC east is like the in at least if you look at the NL -- the Atlanta Braves have a fifteen and a half game lead to the only team over 500. The NL east in the AFC's pretty much. The same animal. There is no competition in that division they're gonna win a minimum of twelve games probably twelve -- fourteen games they're gonna roll over lesser competition. Let's be honest wearing. Old at the Eagles were lesser competition. This is not a good football team they played the Eagles days of being a true playoff team or three or four years behind them. So that was really much of a test. And they're gonna win a lot of games that we're gonna see Brady being Brady. Raised in a row for thirty quote thirty touchdown passes he's going to throw for close to 4000 yards perhaps. But the question is as always it's a long way out I know this is only August. But the real valuation every year for the patriot doesn't comment on -- -- -- in January. And since 2005. When they beat the Philadelphia into January that's what I try to do well. I truly think. When you look at Ridley Vereen and blunt -- you've got asked that that's a pretty impressive stable very ago of running or if you try and you know put extra secondary people out the at a stop Brady will then you can run the ball interviewed tried in. Stack up the line against Brady then he controller over you so I think. That's when he area that you can say -- -- I know broaden our view was armed. To I think it was and their fifteenth in total defense last year and everything so we're not doing cartwheels over man it and and Chip Kelly let's face it he's trying a lot of different things -- we're not saying any of aperture asking me. And I'm telling you that -- -- felt he seems he's a big kid about 67. Didn't really see a whole lot of him but apparently. No -- he could be quite a guy gifted tight end receiver not so much a blocker. As a big receiver -- -- comes back healthy. So overall. Doubt looks good I like the way he had Chandler Jones -- he was only in for a couple of plays but. I think he got a seat while let's face it but I did like the -- -- -- -- -- typing errant shots and had a drop. Mallet threw a ball that did he -- our cart but he didn't put their arms and then there was another one when he was right opening mail system so. You know is it's only the first game I don't think you can build any conclusions to anything. But I agree review this certainly I don't see anybody calls them in terms of the jets -- bills and Miami Miami's getting better but I think the patriots certainly will be here. It's as a that's a great point to bring up and as the season progresses. We're looking at his. Not so much how are they gonna do against a regular season whether they win twelve games or eleven or twelve or whatever. It's -- they have something different and I think that comes from. Playmakers. You have to have a couple of play makers and I think against the ravens last year they just fell short. -- a couple of guys who will play makers. And I look at it this way and you've mentioned the ravens and as exhilarated as you might be. By watching last night's win the sober reality is the last and we -- player real game. The took a lead into the half and they just got bludgeoned in the second half they they scored zero points on offense they gave up three touchdowns I believe. It's the ravens in the second half. And Joseph Flacco and company were just having their way with the patent any chance and of course if you watch any of that 49 a game the other night Anquan Boldin still out there. Medicare cover -- are running backwards a wide receiver. So. This is well look at I think that. If if you are taking anything out of last night's game you realize that Tebow is really a novelty act and it was fun to watch him in the second half -- these exhibition games. By the fourth quarter as a quarterback you're on interest it but I I I was fascinated only. The way were fascinated by accidents on 93. The -- what Tebow was going to do. So I was a curiosity. The layperson there. But. I look at this team as a team that might transition just a little bit with all these young wide receivers. In Amendola coming over from Saint Louis trying to -- Welker shoes. You wonder if perhaps you're gonna see a more balanced offense we have. Ridley continue what he did last year 12100 yards you wonder if we -- blog has a role. In this patriot running game you talk about marine coming out of the backfield making that great catch. In the left corner of the end zone maybe they're gonna become more balanced offense and they're not gonna rely as much on the -- Tom Brady as they have over these last ten -- Wanna see more of that kid did draft pick Colin it's supposed to be -- terrific athlete that you can play in three or four different positions. That's just so much fun about that these exhibition games you get a chance to watch these guys. They'll take that many snaps for obvious reasons but listen this is going to be fun Larry for many many weeks to come it's going to be. -- right up until January and you look at that team last night I look every time the patriots at the field. I always ask the question to myself how have they not managed. To win a super walls since 2005. With -- all the weapons the great quarterback the greatest of his generation. All of these positive things the momentum they have throughout the regular season and the answer is very simple. The answer is in -- and makes had unbelievable play running across the field. Out of nowhere just appears on your TV set and in -- has drops. So you have with your blaming Welker all crowding -- now what I'm saying is -- you look at the two Super Bowl losses to the giants. You had guys who made. Plays and that's -- orbit. Do they have a in -- agents of some playmakers and -- and -- getting some volleys at the playmaker now I'm talking about if the right time in the right place can you come up and liked but the -- skis and Harrison's and -- are now investors have cited -- either -- you'd you'd need guys who could not just do it during the season and compile stats. But when it really matters to the average guy who can come up and make a point four. Willie -- -- that -- -- -- kind of that's why they won the super balls interesting discussion about agent Wilson wondering if and they were pretty frank about last time broadcast of major Wilson the veteran safety they got from Arizona. Perhaps isn't the same player. As he was in all those years playing regularly and you were five years ago thank you Mohamed are only 6177797937. Text line. Courtesy of ATT 37937. Mustard and Johnson's Sports Radio WEEI. -- I think it's all about the same. You know for everybody I mean we've hit some good things out there that was far from perfect -- -- from a -- from -- from a you know -- -- that a -- think that's true. So the coaches the players. I mean I think we played competitively. There were you know we all make mistakes out there and you know things that we can learn from -- certainly on this season formed by any stretch. Well the problem is I think the patriots were in mid season form last night Larry. I would objective back comment from the coach of the during the patriotic dialogue that's what -- do you know in the regular season are roll over their opponents. They usually win between twelve and fourteen games. A lot of things looked very very positive on the patriot front last night where you are one thing I I just quickly and and to remember that many penalties or turnovers or her right to the phones. For the first time I felt bad for Belichick last night but the post season. You know yeah it's it was out of calmer broken Britain asked -- the first proper exit them from all with a much about it. Then others jumped in but. And as I've felt a little -- to Belichick is I don't know what you can really say if it does not much you can say he just got a lot to work on in. You can't really jump to any conclusions immense reserves -- behind it Tebow look what is he supposed to say. What is Belichick never says. I have an update now but in this instance why do you support you know it's like your wife asked me it does is stressed recruit appropriate yeah. I know the cost -- -- first up we mustered just where is Maria hi Steve. That particular call guy thanks thanks for Colin and I just. The -- people he's just intriguing obviously but -- My ignorance some I know that he came from Florida or and I think he was coached by -- barrier Arnold is -- -- no. Spurrier was gone by that point it was Urban Meyer who is the coach at that point. OK everything I'm asking is because I assumed well these are it would have been probably different held out but I'm assuming that. In passing statistic. He's a good Patrick college. I don't have the numbers in front of me it put him more as two way player can run with the football as well and I think everybody says this in complementary turns but it's a euphemism for. Really not an NFL passer when you see it Tim Tebow is a quote. Football player tells you the can do a lot of things well. But not one thing very well in this case it's passing the football yeah I think the other thing they say with him is he's a winner which means that by any means necessary not to be pretty -- yet he gets the job done it -- it -- there when you get to the NFL however then that's when the rubber meets the -- Yeah and amnesty and the speed and the pressure in the NFL it's totally different and I mean let's face it most people. Can't. Stated that caliber. I'm but it seemed like you know I'm I'm just looking at its history and locate in Florida. Pretty good statistics Q what did Denver. He'd -- -- squeak by god he got it done like you guys just. Right -- that little run it -- and became the first record -- -- I I think what you're getting that is what I Astor or do you like how can a guy go through. This epic college systems that a couple of pro teams. And not. I'm not saying become a great throw more pitches that come in OK. For work and is that what you're getting through. Well I am because I mean I think. Maybe taking its appellate check it or even having him on the table product. Surprise everyone and -- maybe it's it's to protect Tom Brady and impulses make sure that he'd -- run. The unnecessary third of all of that on that he will use to seeing them do it made possibly get hurt or funny you know of that option or. Trickery are right there at that time right no right I think doing a whole wall didn't let him get -- -- -- pat if you can and that's just great. -- see even if he can pass a little bit too many if you bring him in for certain plays venue can run a few trick plays and alike but. If the -- just can't throw the ball that when he comes into the game you were automatically know they got -- rom I think we all understand this and you know when John Elway was watching Tim Tebow play for his team couple years ago. And they were we're pulling out some improbable wins in the fourth quarter and had that big guy in Tebow throw it eighty yard. Touchdown pass in the very first play of sudden death overtime in NFL history. Would have thought that Tim Tebow is arm would have produced that. But the guy simply. Is what he is that this when he suddenly not gonna become. This proficient Tom Brady Peyton Manny as pastor John -- saw that. Two years ago and I keep thinking now when temperatures and the camera zooms in the drive repair an overdraft the table later than normal Wear and pick autumn. What was what is -- thinking. That's true what is -- is is that this is your offensive coordinator. Right what is the C yeah he was the head coach and probably general manager without portfolio couple years ago the drafted them. In the first round. And Josh McDaniel must've seen something. And because mcdaniels drafted him and because he's the offensive coordinator back with the patriots. I don't see any any possibility. Tim Tebow not making that team. Do you do you see any scenario worried what that's the question -- how -- I guess now I I thought you speak and the broadcast last night I cut the guys were great barrier and -- jump right on it they said. He's got the ball throw the -- is saying that he should throw the ball any waited an extra two seconds and of course it was an incompletion. That's is the biggest problem I've -- -- him so far is not just -- throwing motion but. He doesn't. Trust what he sees he needs to see more in -- not going to see the mall -- in the NFL. PJ in buffalo your neck -- Jenkins Johnson. I don't think McCall. Well. Particularly bought a grade and bought to open up their few years so I like to create it. A little bit went actually in the same town it back on out he's at least so. It's not a patriot and I -- a little myself so. Put down my equality is not they issued. Pre season we're gonna stop seeing things it's. Normally not absentee from the patriots seem pretty much knew or on the team. I mean Belichick obviously. -- Not that -- it is paying spot. Well what shall -- what you really -- two regular season but because there's so many. Opposition. Basically up for grabs you might see awoke that one appreciate. It out -- asked. Yeah but they still don't -- ending game plan like picket that their play blockers like the yellow pages and they don't. Oh without a doubt without a doubt but fortunate sometimes the only time yet to really cute somebody plays -- do. Is in other competition -- you know the -- so I mean. And maybe -- -- -- -- a couple of years and Alex is all about well built car you know like I haven't. Here's a question for him what was the quarterback of the Buffalo Bills this year. I'm not decide trivia question I don't know who wins let's call you know these are college yet he -- did Alter it. It is that upbeat about and then. And also open I -- and you can never built and than. You know a lot hey if you had your choice would you rather be a bill's the man in a patriot household or patriot -- and a Buffalo Bills -- -- -- right. Now what's gonna happen is they got a game coming -- and EJ Manuel who's a backup quarterback but he supposed to have some. Interesting tools. And as well now they're getting some of these these new quarterbacks that are coming out now and not only -- they run they can pass. Not so much I mean you what you call an -- talk about Tivo. You know that style -- -- new book including college which you get up you play with the big -- pursue -- you know what I mean I mean he. He had good career at Florida State right. Why don't forget so what you're you're coming up with a new kind of quarterback with IG three. Russell Wilson and the like not only can -- -- they can pass for Michael Vick might argument project was. He ran when things got a little bit you know untie eighty he would take off and run. These guys up passers. And but they also can't run. And it's a new exciting. The dimensions that they're bringing into the National Football League I gotta get one of those. I gotta get -- guy locker Ronald. Hold it right and we love the three quarterbacks and it's a spectacular rookie years last year Tebow is not an act category weakening. Yeah this is this puts it in Europe and citing revelation brought to you -- by not the Bible and reading mustered 617. 7797937.
