Sony Open 2013 leaderboard: Keegan Bradley, Matt Kuchar under par but trailing leader Scott Piercy

Scott Piercy jumped out to an early lead in the first round of the Sony Open, holding off several big names to set the pace at 6-under.

The morning wave has completed its round at the Sony Open, the PGA Tour's first full-field event in the 2013 season. Scott Piercy fired an opening round 64 to take a one-shot lead over Jeff Overton at 6-under. Piercy is a lesser-known player but has come on strong in recent months, leading to predictions of big start and impressive 2013 season. Piercy picked up a his second-career win at the RBC Canadian Open last year, which earned him entry into last week's Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Piercy held his own at Kapalua and his low number on Thursday could propel him to his third win in as many years.

Overton took a step back last season after a breakout 2011, but the former Ryder Cupper has the talent to win whenever he gets it rolling. This week, he announced that he made an equipment switch to Adams, and it didn't take long for him to post a low number with the new sticks. He's one shot back at 5-under.

Waialae is a tight layout with narrow fairways, demanding accuracy off the tee and with your approach shots. It's an older course that's relatively flat with only two par-5s. That can be a disadvantage to longer hitter, like pre-tournament favorite Dustin Johnson. Last week's winner at Kapalua had a rollercoaster first round, carding only seven pars during an even-par round of 70. His playing partners, Zach Johnson and defending champ Johnson Wagner, were two other favorites entering the week but they both failed to get in the red, shooting 71.

Matt Kuchar is the most accomplished player in the top 10, two shots back at 4-under. Kuchar had a bit of a disappointing week at the ToC, but his accuracy off the tee on Thursday resulted in just one bogey en route to a 66. Keegan Bradley also appeared well on his way to top 10 round, but a wild approach shot at No. 6 led to double bogey. The ball landed near a palm tree, affecting his back swing. He left his pitch shot short of the putting surface, and some sloppiness on the green led to the double. But Keegan is still in good shape at 2-under as the afternoon wave gets out on the course in Honolulu.
