Rebecca Seiferle

[I was listening]

I was listening to the voices of women
who cried out in many tongues,
many of them reduced to

the unique inverted,
the head upside down through the habit
of being trained in dressage,

I thought it was you who put down the innocent,
I thought I was only floating when guilty,
on the stained floor of the kitchen,

and it was not enough
cooked in the bone marrow and small bags,
who gave of vinegar and oil,

who were consumed by a cruelest of bread, who was meek
and not inherited, who was a peacemaker
who found a cold shoulder, turning,

always turning away into
someone else?s morning, who
hungered and thirsted for the scent of orange blossoms

and who was kept like muscle weakness
in a cage for growing calves, pure
of heart and met by the proscriptions of a parakeet

exercising its rules by rote, who was merciful
and told to gnaw on a borrow of soap, who was
hungry and thirsty and cried out I love you to an empty

electronic ear, who writhed in the forsakenness
of the body, who was taken for speaking the wrong
language and shipped back to

what owned her, while her children that no one understood
cried out in their new homeland of orphanages
until, abruptly and

inexplicably, as a star turning
on its axis, the human voice broke free of the chord
of deafness

into nothing but joy

I Love Beach Music

Summertime at the ocean is full of heat. All kinds of heat. Eva Faye liked to be right in the middle of it.? Nights, barefoot in the sand. Cold beer, she?d nurse one for hours.? At Atlantic Beach there was a Beach Music Festival held every year right after the Fourth of July.? Beach music ain?t the music you might think, there?s no connection to any other beach other than the Carolina?s and it don?t have nothing to do with The Beach Boys.? It is Rhythm and Blues from the black singers, the ones who would be called foul names if they showed up just to dance. Maybe worse than called foul names. It is The Embers, The Coasters, The Drifters, Chairman of the Board and Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson, it is jump blues and soul and the clubs hummed and thumped it into the thick summer ocean air of North and South Carolina.

Eva Faye likes to hang at Cecil Corbett?s Beach Club down near Myrtle Beach.? One night she is holding court, as she likes to call it, and Rollin Walker appears at the table.? He is about fifty years old, and he?s wearing khaki pants and a golf shirt that got too tight around his belly like he?s gonna pop. ?Not right now, but try me again later,? she says.? And soon as he walks off, Eva Faye looks at the man to her right and says, ?Let?s shag, come on let?s shag.?

Of course shagging don?t mean the same thing as it does in other places. At Cecil Corbett?s Beach Club down near Myrtle Beach, it means dancing and it means dancing the shag.? Eva Faye is a queen of the shag.? She can dance like nobody?s business, moving those legs of hers around like wet noodles, shifting and shuffling, with her face lit up like she?s eating Christmas.

And all the while she?s acting like she?s not paying no mind, no mind to anyone or anything but the dance. And leaving people with no idea that she has mapped the whole room out, and the next three hours too.

Lou Freshwater is a student of literature and existential philosophy, but mostly she loves spicy food and the Delta Blues. She considers herself to be a lifelong student of these and other things. Her poetry and fiction have been published in?Red Wheelbarrow?and?Modern Haiku, and she has also published an essay on the Existentialism of Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams in the?Arthur Miller Journal.

That?s why you buy the hard-case Maxell
instead of the 3-for-a-buck K-Mart pack.
That?s why your set-list is so eclectic,
such a unified arc, your fingers poised
as the needle enters that tricky smooth zone
between tracks ? press Record too early
and you?ll get dead air, but press too late
and you?ll have to hit Rewind, do-over.
This will make pops and clicks, bad omens
for your prowess (what this is all about).
So you hunch over the cheap cassette deck?s
buttons while cueing the needle just so
at a flirty song from a just-bought album ?
Romeo Void?s Never Say Never ?
. . . You might like me better if we slept together . . .
Which may be a bit much. Yet it must be said.
Not that this will be the first cut, no,
even you and your hormones know that?s wrong.
Avalon by Brian Ferry will set the mood
with its upscale, dream-state, late-night riff,
. . . Now the party?s over . . .
Yes, this is when things happen on Avalon,
whose island courtly love is your pry-bar
to the long chance of sex in some vague future.
And even though you?re not wild about Piaf,
La Vie en Rose charms, imbues you with soul,
the world-weary kind not the Motown.
You will be fun to talk to afterwards.
The urge to include Barber?s Angus Dei
must be resisted for it?s just so sad
she might start crying uncontrollably.
Besides, you need words in English not Latin.
You need outsourced smooth-talk from your records,
proxy lines like Cyrano de Bergerac?s
exquisite shit that seduced Roxanne,
which will be, of course, the very last track
(you and Sting, Sting and you, what?s the difference?) ?
. . . You don?t have to wear that red dress tonight . . .
Baby, I?m here. I made this tape for you.

Songdust

The smoke hung high in the air and swung low in the curtains, blown by an old ceiling fan that twirled above the tiny stage.? Oswald Bleu stood near the back of the room, leaning against the wall with one foot against the bricks and the other planted on the beer stained hardwood floor. He had come through the doors of The Village Stone at dusk to sign up for the open mic.? It was evening now and he was not scheduled to play until the end of the night.? Oswald loathed the waiting.? He considered it bad luck to sit amongst the crowd for any lengthy period of time before playing ? bad luck because he usually ended up drinking and smoking too much and this caused him to invariably fall short of his own expectations.

Lish had the stage and was?reading a poem, pacing back and forth, microphone at his mouth, preaching his arrogant prose, stopping suddenly to chastise a pair of young college students for?talking?during his performance.? Oswald had witnessed this type of display from Lish at other open mics and had come to respect the old man?s writing, but?considered him an asshole.? Well, he thought, so was Dylan.

Following Lish was an overweight woman who sang a song about all of the items in her kitchen.? The resonant shrill sent Oswald outside.? He noticed people alone, people in pairs, people in clusters of three or more pass him by.? No one glanced at him.

An hour later, the host announced him and Oswald walked onto the stage, his guitar slung across his shoulder.??He stood silently at the back of the stage, half-turned away from the audience. He waited until the crowd grew quiet and curious.? Then with measured steps he walked into the spotlight and planted his left foot directly onto the base of?the microphone?stand and?the other firmly at an angle.?He paused again?and then?dove into a furious version of an old blues song called ?Fixin? To Die.?? It was loud and raucous and he sang it ferociously. The crowd sat up.? Legs were uncrossed, backs were straightened, mouths hung open. They watched?the young man?on?stage where the smoke hung high and swung low into the curtains.? He ended the song abruptly, with a gutteral ?uh? and a punch into the air. ?He stood still.? The crowd held their breath, then roared into applause.? Oswald simply smiled and stepped back.? The crowd fell quiet. ?He turned and pulled the string on the ceiling fan?so that it slowed and stopped, the room now perfectly silent.

Oswald eyed the audience.? He remained motionless in the center of the stage, five feet away from the microphone.? Just before the silence became uncomfortable, he walked slowly up to the mic and gently rolled into a quiet ballad.? It was his masterpiece.? As he sung, his eyes remained closed. Sweat ran down the side of his face as he slowly drew the song to its end and said, ?I?m Oswald Bleu.? Thanks for listening.?

The crowd?s applause was wild.? Without looking up, Oswald packed his guitar into its case and walked out the front door of The Village Stone.

Soon thereafter, The Village Stone was hollow with chairs askew, tables littered with empty glasses.? All that remained was the haunt of a young man?s voice echoing in the corners with the smoke and the song dust left behind.

Help with kids. And pets. And ? | Harvard Gazette

When Tessa Lowinske Desmond?s husband was offered a tenure-track position at Harvard in 2010, the opportunity proved too enticing for the academic couple to resist. But the Desmonds? dream job was also every new parent?s nightmare: a distant relocation to a city where they knew virtually no one.

?We moved from Wisconsin, with newborn in arms, excited to be at Harvard but nervous to not have any resources,? Desmond said, referring to child-care help for her son, Sterling, now almost 3. Last year, the Desmonds turned to a resource that has been gaining ground among Harvard parents: the WATCH Portal, an online child-care hub that helps connect faculty, staff, and graduate student parents with student sitters.

?It was just a huge blessing for us,? said Desmond, the program administrator for ethnic studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS).

Heartened by early success stories like Desmond?s, the Office of Work/Life and the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity (FD&D), which jointly developed the WATCH Portal last year, are expanding the site?s features.

The WATCH Portal (Web Access to Care at Harvard Portal) grew last month to allow postings for a variety of odd jobs. Anyone with a Harvard PIN can now post and view listings seeking Harvard students (or the teenage children of Harvard employees) to help with yard work, dog walking, house sitting, and other chores.

?It?s not just parents who are juggling multiple tasks, and Harvard gets that,? said Nancy Costikyan, director of the Office of Work/Life. ?This expansion is one more way that Harvard can support the very busy lives of all our faculty and staff.?

The update was in part spurred by direct requests from faculty, said Judith Singer, senior vice provost for FD&D and Harvard?s James Bryant Conant Professor of Education. Already, posts have sprung up on the site seeking everything from a housekeeper to a personal chef willing to cook vegetarian meals.

?Some people with older children said they no longer needed child care, but would welcome tutoring for their teenagers,? Singer said.??Others without children said they?d love to get a student to help with odd jobs, from dog sitting to stacking wood.?

In its first year, the WATCH Portal garnered 1,566 users; two-thirds were parents, the rest were job-seeking students. And visitors were making real connections: Nearly 700 emails have been sent between baby sitters and parents using the site.

When her former baby sitter became unavailable, Myl?ne Priam, an associate professor of Romance languages and literatures in FAS, said she immediately thought of the WATCH Portal.

Priam had used Craigslist to look for a nanny before the portal launched; she liked that WATCH was vetted and easy to use. That access is free, compared with other online services she?d seen that charge a fee for entry to a database of vetted sitters, was another draw.

?I?m grateful it was there when I was in a conundrum,? said Priam, who routinely uses a baby sitter for her 6-year-old daughter on nights and weekends. ?It was great to know there was something like that already out there, that I didn?t have to wrack my brain.?

Then there are Harvard parents like Desmond and her husband, Matthew, an assistant professor of sociology and a junior fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows, whose jobs entail after-hours commitments that are essential to their developing careers. He had faculty dinners; she had evening events with students and visiting scholars to manage.

Having easy access to baby sitters who lived on campus was crucial, Desmond said. Harvard students often meet her at her office, pick up her son, Sterling, and spend a few hours at the Cambridge Public Library or playing in the Center for Government and International Studies (CGIS) lounge; they?ve even taken Sterling to their Houses.

?He was meeting other students and going to the dining hall, which he thought was great,? Desmond said. ?I?m going to tell him he was running the halls of Harvard when he was 2 years old.?

Desmond said she may use the site for dog sitting or house sitting, now that those options are available.

?Having access to the WATCH Portal made our work and our life so much easier,? she said. ?It made everything more seamless, and it made it possible for me to be fully present at my job.?

"East Coast rapist" pleads guilty to Virginia attack

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Connecticut man police say is the "the East Coast rapist" who terrorized women for more than a decade pled guilty on Thursday in a 2001 attack on a Virginia woman, the first time someone has taken responsibility for crimes in any of these cases.

Aaron Thomas, 40, of New Haven, Connecticut, pled guilty in Loudoun County Circuit Court to the rape and abduction of a 41-year-old woman, according to online records. He faces a prison sentence of life on these charges. A charge of forcible sodomy was dropped.

On Friday, Thomas is due to have a plea hearing in Virginia's Prince William County on rape, abduction and firearms charges, according to online court records. He is accused there of a 2009 assault on three teenage girls who were returning from Halloween trick or treating.

A plea deal in that case fell through this month, and a trial has been set for January.

Thomas, the son of a District of Columbia police officer, was arrested in March 2011 in New Haven. Police have said that DNA links him to attacks on at least 17 women in Maryland, Virginia, Rhode Island and Connecticut since 1997.

Google TV Update Adds Voice Search, Improved Guide

A new Google TV update makes being a couch potato even easier.

The update is rolling out this week - first to LG devices - and adds voice search, PrimeTime, and better YouTube integration, Google said in a blog post.

Now, users can instantly access TV shows and movies, play online videos, open applications, and search Google, by just asking.

The new feature provides quick access to any channel (just say "CNN" to change stations), live and streaming options, and instructional YouTube videos (ask "how to tie a bow tie"). Unsure of exactly what you're in the mood for? Simply say "search movies with Jeff Bridges" for a list of possibilities in the new, more visual search results page.

Additionally, Google TV's revamped guide, now called PrimeTime, makes it easier to find favorite content. Accessible anywhere in the Google TV app, users can quickly flip through live TV, access favorite channels, see recently watched TV shows, and find new suggestions.

LG device owners will receive the Google TV update in the next few weeks, according to product Managers Greg Funk and Eric Liu, while it rolls out to other second-generation hardware in the coming months. First-gen devices will see updates to PrimeTime and YouTube.

Google TV already received an update in October 2011, when the service integrated the Google Play store, customized the home screen, and improved content from Netflix, YouTube, HBO GO, and other streaming sites.

"The initial version of Google TV wasn't perfect," Google said last year, "but launching it gave us the opportunity to learn."

That learning process also led to a better YouTube viewing experience on Google TV, which the company announced Tuesday.

The updated app for Android smartphones/tablets and Google TV automatically pairs the devices over the same Wi-Fi connection, allowing big-screen playback of any YouTube video from an Android-based phone or tablet. Remote control-like options ? pause, scroll, skip ? are included, as well as the ability to search for videos or browse the Web on your gadget while video playback continues, uninterrupted, on the TV.

For more, see PCMag's Hands On With Google TV 3.1 and the slideshow above. Also, check out Google's video below for more details on its updated service.

2013 Budget has Naf. 29 Million Deficit --- Finance Minister Plans to ...

rtuitt29112012Philipsburg:--- Minister of Finance Roland Tuitt announced on Wednesday during the Council of Ministers' weekly press briefing that he is still working on balancing the final draft 2013 budget which has a deficit of 29 million guilders. Minister Tuitt said that he is hoping to finalize the 2013 draft budget by Friday this week which will he submit to the CFT and Council of Advice before sending it over to Parliament for approval. The Finance Minister said he is trying hard to have the budget dealt with in Parliament before the Christmas recess.
One way the Minister of Finance is looking into to collect more revenues is to offer incentives to businesses that are not paying their share of taxes. Minister Tuitt said that his Ministry is focusing heavily on tax compliance and if the businesses respond accordingly then St. Maarten would be able to balance its budget without any hardships. Tuitt said because the government placed heavy focus on the compliance of taxes they already have six million guilders more than they had last year. The intention he said is to be able to cover 10 million in tax collection next year. The Finance Minister said government is busy putting certain tools in place to further increase the tax compliance. Tuitt also issued a stronger appeal to the businesses on St. Maarten to comply with his request and pay their dues. Tuitt said that his Ministry is willing to put incentives for businesses for the month of December 2012 for those businesses that show interest in paying their taxes. He said government is willing to waive the penalties that were placed on businesses who did not comply and pay their taxes over the past years. Another step the government is trying to take is to collect its dividends from the Central Bank and to privatize the granting of scholarships that are given to students annually. Tuitt said government gives out over Naf. 4 million annually on scholarships. The Finance Minister said the idea is to place the scholarships in a fund that would be tasked with collecting the monies past (old) students owes the government. He said over time this fund will become self-sufficient and government would no longer have to contribute to it or budget for it. Tuitt said there is one worrisome item in the budget and that is the debt ceiling that St. Maarten has. The Finance Minister made clear that this is one topic he intends to discuss with the Government of the Netherlands. Tuitt said when the calculations are done St. Maarten would be in a position to borrow as much as 620 million guilders.
The Finance Minister also announced on Wednesday that the government of St. Maarten is considering levying more taxes on the sale of alcohol and tobacco. He said St. Maarten is not the only country heading in this direction because the State of France already implemented laws to add more taxes on the sale of alcohol and tobacco.
The Minister of Finance also intends to meet with the various casinos on the island to inform them that government is also contemplating the implementation of Turn over Tax (TOT) on casinos. Those meetings the Minister of Finance said are scheduled to take place next week.

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? Manhattan mega-rentals: Why ...

214 Lafayette Street, listed at $100,000 a month

By Sarah Trefethen

Homeownership may be an American ideal, but not everyone with the means to buy a property chooses to do so.
And far from being limited to budget-conscious offerings, Manhattan?s rental listings include some truly jaw-dropping properties.

From 80 Washington Place in Greenwich Village (listed with Douglas Elliman for $95,000 per month) to 247 Central Park West on the Upper West Side (Sotheby?s International, $90,000 per month,) super-high end rentals can be found throughout Manhattan.

Factors that lead people to eschew a purchase in favor of a high-end rental are as varied as the individuals involved, but there are some common themes, brokers say. Among them are convenience, flexibility and, in some cases, the opportunity to live in a space that simply isn?t available for sale.

?Many people just prefer renting,? said Gary Malin, president of Citi Habitats. ?They have investments tied up in other assets they don?t want to liquidate.?

At the Waldorf Towers, located within the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, Margaret Bay of Brown Harris Stevens handles rentals with lease terms of one month or longer.

Among the listings currently available in the towers is a 6,000 s/f, five-bedroom apartment that was home to the composer Cole Porter from 1934 to 1964. The apartment ? like all the residences in the building ? comes with hotel amenities, including maid and room service, and is listed for $150,000 per month.

Other listings available at the East 50th Street address include two three-bedroom apartments, one for $135,000 and the other for a mere $95,000 per month.

Some tenants stay only a few months, Bay said, while others stay for decades. Rentals are popular with families whose homes are going through renovations, and people who are only planning to stay in New York for a few years.

One 10-year tenant moved in after a divorce because she simply didn?t want to go through the process of disclosing her finances to a co-op board, Bay said, while the towers are also popular with corporate tenants and diplomatic missions.

?We?re very accommodating,? she said. ?We can really make anything happen. If you need 20 bedrooms in six apartments we can do that.?

The apartments are usually rented furnished, Bay said, but with the right lease terms tenants can arrange to redecorate and even renovate to suit.

At 214 Lafayette Street in SoHo, on the other hand, the furnishings are part of the deal.

?We would consider it for the right number, but really it is furnished to perfection. The vibe of the furnishings perfectly match the space,? said Steve Halpern of Citi Habitats, who leases the 13,000 s/f, three-bedroom townhouse. ?I don?t think you?re going to love the house and not love the furniture.?

The owners, horror movie director Marcus Nispel and his songwriter wife Dyan, spent over ten years renovating the former power station that Halpern describes as ?an architectural masterpiece.?

The stonework in the bathrooms came from an old monastery in the south of France and the indoor swimming pool was featured in the music video for singer Beyonce?s video ?Halo.?

The appeal for tenants is ?not just the luxury the apartment allows, but it?s also in just how unique it is to live there,? Halpern said. The space is available at a day rate for parties and photo and video shoots, but it was rented for three months over the summer and Halpern said he?s shown it to a number of parties interested in one-year leases.

In addition to a prime location and unique setting, the meticulously finished home offers turn-key convenience.

?On the very high end of the rental side, people are not looking to rent apartments that need work,? Malin said.

Renting also saves residents the uncertainty of having to sell later in what might turn out to be a down real estate market.

?A lot of people like to rent the dream as opposed to buying the dream,? Malin said.

My 13-Year-Old Baldur's Gate Review, Enhanced Edition

My 13-Year-Old Baldur's Gate Review, Enhanced EditionWhen PC role-playing classic Baldur's Gate was released in 1998, I was writing for a small gaming news site called Videogamers.com. BioWare's masterpiece was my first official PC game review. While Videogamers.com is long gone, the magical Internet Wayback Machine houses an archived version of the review, at least until I figure out a way to erase it.

In honor of Beamdog's release of the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for the PC and Mac (still waiting on those mobile versions), I've dug up that collection of loosely-related words and added some writer commentary.

This is going to hurt.

I'd say I started playing Dungeons and Dragons back in 1985. A group of friends and I would camp out in the woods behind my apartment complex and play all night long. I've been playing pretty steadily since then, and I can honestly say I've invested at least 2,000 dollars in the game over the years. I am currently searching for copies of the cartoon (remember Uni?) on video. I have every novel, have played every computer D&D game that's come out, and I own at least 20lbs of dice. D&D (or more correctly AD&D) is one of my greatest passions, right up there with videogames, good Italian food, and my wife (though not necessarily in that order.) That having been said, believe me when I say that Baldur's Gate is the best AD&D videogame yet to have been released.

Look at all those extra words. "I'd say", "honestly", "currently", "yet to have been released". Back in the day, more words meant more quality. Oh yeah, I had a wife at the time. She wasn't very good.

Baldur's gate, developed by Bioware, plays like tabletop AD&D with very animated miniatures, no smoke or potty breaks between rounds, and no waiting for the Dungeon Master to finish up reading the module in the bathroom before you can start. Everything else is by the book, and by that I mean all the rules are here. Encumbrance, THAC0 (to hit armor class 0), fumbled hits, thieving skills, weapon proficiencies, random treasure generation; if it's a rule in the DM or Players' guide, then it's a good bet it made it into the game.

And you thought I was obsessed with toilet gaming now.

Sounds complicated, right?

Dramatic question! I bet I imagined the reader nodding along with this bit.

It is, but not to the gamer. All of these calculations and effects take place behind the scenes. If you fumble and break your weapon, the game will tell you. If you carry more than your strength allows you will have serious trouble keeping up with your party. If you fail your saving throw against petrification, the lesser basilisk will kill you dead. The end result is very satisfying. You can't almost hear the dice rolls going on and you may even catch a whiff of unwashed fanboys enjoying themselves.

That's right, can't. My editor at Videogamers.com was 17. He was probably distracted by girls or fast cars or whatever else the kids were into back then. I am still proud of "unwashed fanboys enjoying themselves".

The story is classic fantasy material. Your initial character is a mysterious orphan, raised by a loving foster father in the city of Candlekeep. Everything is lovely and peaceful until one day, when murderers start showing up hungry for your blood, and your father asks you to flee the city with him under cover of the night. You of course agree, fleeing with him only to be attacked on the road outside town, resulting in the tragic death of the man who was the only family you ever knew. Tired, frightened, and alone, you set off to find the truth behind your life and his death. Thus begins your epic tale.

I should have just copied that from the manual.

As you travel you'll meet some very interesting characters. There is a doom and gloom speaking mage, a druidess who often addresses the player as "Oh omnipresent one", and a Ranger whose sidekick is a miniature giant space hamster named Boo. And these are just the characters you can play. Bioware has populated the Forgotten Realms with familiar faces like Elminster the Archmage and Drizzt Do'Urden the Drow ranger. If you've read the books you'll notice familiar concepts too, like the elven mage you can have join your party who is bonded to his hereditary Moonblade.

LOOK AT HOW MUCH I KNOW ABOUT D&D. Loooooook at it. Impressed, aren't you? I sure am.

The game incorporates many features from other popular games. The perspective is Diablo. The point and click commands reminded me of Warcraft and other games of that ilk. Basically you control your character and up to 5 others as a group or singularly. You pick actions using shortcut keys or handy icons on the display, and the characters follow the instructions. Do you have all characters attack at once, or do you let a few hang back in case of ambush, throw some big fighter into the fray and have your thief circle around for a backstab? Do you want to control all characters yourself or pick from several behavior archetypes? Paper or plastic? That's the beauty of the game. There are so many things to do and so many ways to do them, so gameplay never gets dull or repetitive.

Here I am comparing BioWare to Blizzard, years before it was cool. Let me just slip on my thick-framed black glasses.

The game's presentation is very solid. The menus are mainly icon driven and easy to navigate, especially the "paper doll" style inventory screen where you can drop equipment, armor, weapons, and even quick-access spells onto your characters to prepare them for battle. On the main screen you have a large playfield area, with the areas you have not visited blacked-out (love that feature). Each character has a set of quick icon commands that appear along the bottom of the screen when they are selected. Here you can place oft-used spells, magic scrolls, wands, potions, or special abilities like turning undead or laying hands. Everything you need is right at your fingertips thanks to the intuitive interface.

Very solid. Not sure what that means. And look at me getting all excited over a fog-of-war feature. I was so cute back then.

The detailed graphics of Baldur's Gate are nothing short of amazing. Each map location is almost like a painting, with a look and feel that balances technical skill with artistic flair. While this is enough to satisfy most critics, the developers add day and night effects as well as snow and rain, complete with lightning lighting up the screen. Your characters and other NPC's not only look great but animate smoothly. The fact that your characters' looks change with their equipment is a very nice touch. Monsters are menacingly portrayed, from the tiny kobold to hill giants and beyond. Baldur's Gate also has its fair share of special effects, most notably the spells that spring to life from their caster's hands in brilliant flashes of light and color and sound. Just like I used to imagine them.

To this day I stand by the fact that the most important feature for a role-playing game to have is equipment that changes a character's appearance. If I am putting on new armor, I want to see new armor.

Adding to the ambiance is the soundtrack, consisting of tunes as epic as the adventure it accompanies. Pounding music meets the clash of weapons in battle while underlying menace can be heard in the dungeon dirges. The sound effects add to the environment nicely, bringing not only the clang of swordplay and the growl of the beast, but also the ambient noise of the realms, like crickets chirping at night or the murmurs from a crowded tavern. Rounding out the sound portion of our review are the voices, which manage to avoid being cheesy while adding some (much needed at times) comic relief. You may lose bladder control the first time the insane ranger yells, "Go for the eyes Boo! GO FOR THE EYES!"

Thirteen years later I am still losing bladder control, and not just while playing video games!

The multiplayer play consists of the same storyline as the main game, but instead of one player controlling 6 characters, up to 6 people can play at a time, each controlling their own character. Almost like sitting around the old gaming table. If you get a good group together it almost doesn't get any better than this. As with every game of its type, beware of the few bad apples out there who want the money from your pouch and the experience from your death.

I forgot Baldur's Gate had a multiplayer feature until reading this.

Now to be fair I did have a few problems with Baldur's Gate. The install was the main issue. Unless you have room for the full install you will have to swap between the 5 CDs frequently. Oh, and the full install is 2.5GB. Yes, times are a'changing. I also had some trouble with slowdown during some of the more "Ten Commandment" sized battles, but not enough to ruin my overall enjoyment of the game.

Holy shit, 2.5GB!? Somebody call the pope!

After playing Baldur's Gate for several days I have still not seen everything. The game is huge and every inch is more interesting than the last. I have to say it's about damn time someone truly captured the essence of AD&D in a computer game. Bioware has done it, and with the promise of further expansions (read: modules!) for this masterpiece, Baldur's Gate will keep you going for a long time coming. Just remember to eat and bathe, fanboys.

Rest assured the constant mention of dirty fanboys was the result of my own dirty fanboyishness.

And here we have the old VideoGamers.com rating system, in which I arbitrarily tossed out letters that seemed right.
My 13-Year-Old Baldur's Gate Review, Enhanced Edition

I believe there's an Austin Powers reference in there, though I admit nothing.

Well that was painful, though not nearly as bad as some of my other early reviews. You might find some of them here. I apologize in advance.

Why A Dedicated VM For Your TFS Hosting Service

More and more people incline to choose hosting services. It is convenient, secure, cost-effective, etc. Usually, a hosting company would provide two kinds of plans for their customers with different requirements: Shared Plan and Managed Plan. The primary difference between these plans is that the Mnaged plan provides users a dedicated virtual machine.

So why Managed Plan, in spite of that it costs more money? Take Dynamsoft's TFS Hosting service (http://www.dynamsoft.com/Products/TFS-Hosting.aspx) for example, I'll give 5 reasons:

1. More Intense Monitoring

Besides the 24*7 network and security monitoring from the world-class primus data center, our administrator 24*7 monitors your server to ensure you get the maximum security and performance capability.

24*7 track your hosting environment
Monitor your server, CUP/memory usages
Track and eliminate unexpected traffic increases
2. More secure and independent

Instead of sharing one SQL Server with other hosting users, you get your own instance of VM and SQL Server. By isolating your database from others, the dedicated VM environment decreases the impact from other hosting users to the minimum.

3. Flexible

Urban Turtle and Build Server are optional add-ons provided by Dynamsoft's hosting services, both for the shared and managed plans. Besides these two add-ons, you are allowed to install additional software/add-ons onto your virtual machine. To keep a secure environment, remote access is disabled to avoid any malicious data.

In the meantime, based on the ongoing proactive server monitoring, Dynamsoft provides the maximum available memory in the most flexible way. Security and other software upgrades and patches can be applied according to your requirements.

4. More Resources

Considering teams with more than 5 members are more inclined to choose the Managed Plan, we design the plan to help customers focus on their own tasks, no worry about the performances and the resource related questions that might be caused by the expanding teams and the size-increasing projects under version control. You are allowed to expand the physical memory based on the 4G by default. The maximum storage capacity is also increasable to fully fulfill your requirements.

5. More support

One of the main differences that make the dedicated hosting service standout is that the Managed Plan offs more support. As a customer oriented company, Dynamsoft opens different support channels, including email, online chat, phone call, forum, knowledge base and the ticket system, as the standard ones to help customers from different time zones. On top of those, managed plan users will get best practice suggestions and consultant from our R&D team based on the 8 years of experiences in developing our own version control and issue tracking tools.
(Our team developed SourceAnywhere for VSS as the fastest internet and cross-platform VSS solution; then SourceAnywhere, a SQL Server based version control; and then we have SCM Anywhere available which constitutes version control and issue tracking.)

If you are interested in the Managed Plan of Dynamsoft tfs Hosted, you can check out the following page for detailed information. 5-day free trial is available for you.

Review: 'Hairy Tales' by Arges Systems | Video Game Blog, Video ...

Genre: Puzzle?

Platforms: App Store for Mac / iOS, Desura for Windows

Developer: Arges Systems

Release date: October 5th 2012

You will tear your hair out.

Hairy Tales is the debut offering from fledgling indie studio Arges Systems. Developed with the Unity 3D engine, it takes the form of an isometric tile-swapping puzzle-game, with a large amount of inspiration drawn from both traditional board games and the Amiga classic, ?Lemmings?. In this game, you must safely guide your hirsute protagonist across a board comprised of a number of hexagonal tiles. Naturally, this board contains all manner of hazards and obstacles, and like the aforementioned Lemmings, your charge has very little concern for his own safety. He is happy to blindly rush off in whatever direction you face him, oblivious to his surroundings. By moving and rotating tiles, you must force him to navigate a safe path to the levels exit. Along the way, you will collect power-ups which allow you to clear obstacles and improve your end of level rating. This is all couched in a story about defeating some evil ?corruption? befouling the folksy paradise which ?The Hairies? inhabit ? The Hairies, of course, being the little caveman-like creatures under your command. The backstory is vaguely told in a number of short animated cutscenes, and really serves little purpose in the game save as a framing device for the puzzles.

First of all, right off the bat, we have to confront that title: ?Hairy Tales? is one of the worst monikers for a game I have come across in a long time. Not since ?Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake-Eater? has a title so invited innuendo and satire. It tells you literally nothing about the game, except for indicating a possible emphasis on story (misleading, to say the least), and a vague suggestion of events of a trichological nature (okay, it?s a little closer to the truth on that one). One should never judge a book by its cover, of course, but having a title that sounds like it was dreamt up by an adult entertainment exec is not really a good jumping-off point for an innocent puzzler.

YouTube Preview Image

Now to the gameplay. Hairy Tales introduces you gently to the games main mechanics, with the early 10 levels or so providing you with simple tutorials on how to manipulate the game world, and your character within it. New elements to the puzzles, such as fences and arrows which redirect your character, and enemies which must be defeated by using power-ups, are drip fed slowly into the levels. Hairy Tales does a good job of not holding your hand too much, and doesn?t condescend you as so many games seem to these days. It trusts you to figure out the puzzle solutions for yourself, and gives you multiple ways to achieve each. However, there is a catch. Hairy Tales gets brutal very quickly, and I mean ?smash your computer with a hammer and wish terrible things upon the games ?creators? brutal. Literally, one level you are just doodling along, admiring the cutesy animations and folky background music, completing a by-the-numbers puzzle, and then suddenly BAM!?.you are hit by a difficulty curve so steep that even Evil Knievel would have soiled himself at the sight of it. Honestly, it?s incredibly noticeable, and one has to wonder how many people looking for a casual, colourful gaming experience a la Angry Birds would be dismayed by it. For a game so innocent in its appearance, a deeply challenging chin-scratcher lies ? paradoxically ? just beneath its exterior. Those looking for a more complex, longer lasting puzzle experience, though, will find great value for money in Hairy Tales. Because it doesn?t force you to accept a single solution to a puzzle, and guide you to this conclusion with the usual winks and nudges, the game makes you feel a deep sense of satisfaction at the end of each level. They?re not just purely mentally challenging, either. In many situations you must rapidly move and rotate tiles whilst your character is legging it round the map, meaning you rely on your reflexes as much as you rely on your noodle. This blend of quick responses and forward planning give the game a similar feel to Portal, and that same sense of feeling peculiarly powerful when crafting a solution.

However, the gameplay is not without its faults. Its not just the puzzles themselves that pose an obstacle ? sometimes, the controls and camera ?are as challenging as the level design. I lost count of the number of times that I was nearing the end of a level, only to have my grizzly avatar thrown off a cliff because of a misplaced tile. The controls are incredibly finicky, and when it comes to camera, you?ve got two choices ? extreme close-up, or floaty isometric view. Sometimes, it?s not very clear which way a character or tile is facing, and it would be extremely useful to be able to rotate the camera ? a feature which, in my mind, is inexplicably missing. Instead, you have to waste a life by just setting your little guy running, and see which way he goes. Needless to say, this leads to some moments of hair-pulling frustration.

Picture of the game map

Unity 3D graphics engine showing off its cel shading

The visuals in the game are nice but not terribly unique. It?s the quirky, deformed art style we?ve seen in every platformer / puzzler since Crash Bandicoot ? big red toadstools, lanky, large headed characters, the slimy greens and browns of the foul ?corrupted? swampland. Nothing here to write home about, but it?s all done nicely and suits the feel of the game. The now ubiquitous cel shading is back for another game, but it?s something the Unity engine seems built to do, and looks good on a mobile screen. Much of the same can be said for the audio ? it?s nice and functional, it works, but it?s not going to be something you?re humming at work for days. Also, some of the sound effects the in-game creatures make are incredibly grating after awhile, and I found myself turning off the SFX pretty early on.

The game currently consists of 72 levels spread over three game worlds. Given the games difficulty, it?s enough to keep you busy for a good long time, especially if you?re up to the task of getting top scores on every level. If you like your puzzlers tough, it?s good value for money and should keep you occupied on those long commutes over the run up to Christmas.

Pros:

  • Solidly challenging gameplay.
  • An abundance of levels will keep you going for a long time.
  • Pretty, if uninspiring graphics and music

Cons:

  • INSANE jump in difficulty, from childs play to hellish brain-torture.
  • Frustrating camera angles.
  • Occasionally shonky controls can be irksome.

Final Score:

If you like ?em tough, and you?re patient, then this is for you. If not, then avoid (or risk going bald with frustration.)

Action research----A must in Education: Action Research Progress ...

Action Research Project: Results Now

Progress Report

Troy Spivey

Lamar University

Abstract or Executive Summary

The action research study was conducted at Garrison High School, a small rural district in Texas with a high number of economically disadvantage students.? The school introduced a plan 2 years ago which was directed at reaching the needs of the ?at risk? population.? The school has experienced great results since the new innovations have been created.? According to the PEIMS report, the school has experienced a steady decrease in African American math scores over the last 3 years.? This category alone has prevented the district from receiving an Exemplary status according to the state ratings.? The school currently uses an online data accumulation program called DMAC.? The computer software uses disaggregated data to provide teachers and administrators access to individualized student reports.? The purpose of the research project is to compare results from regular scheduled benchmarks to the overall results of the standardized test.??? The study confirmed that results from regularly scheduled benchmarks were directly related to the performance scores on the standardized test.? The study lead to faculty and staff placing more emphasis on the relative data gathered from results of the benchmarks. The study includes data which proves that students whom struggle on benchmarks intern struggle with objectives on the standardized test.? This information proves that benchmarks are correctly aligned objectives and staff will work to brainstorm ways to improve performance.? The research study includes results from a student survey and an interview with an instructional teacher and current curriculum director.? The results from the surveys and interviews were evaluated and a meeting was scheduled. The administration devised a system in which struggling students attended tutorials on a weekly basis. The innovative plan for improvement was a collaborative plan between administrators, students, and teachers.? The objective of the staff and administration was to improve student understanding over the course of the year. The administration now uses the benchmarks to better evaluate the understanding of students. The administration provided training using the online program DMAC so that all staff consistently had readily accessible information. The staff now must conduct research studies on their own to determine the level of understanding from students.???????????

Introduction / Background (Section One)?

Results Now is an action research study that was conducted at Garrison High School in Garrison Texas.? The school enrolls 209 students in the high school and serves over 43% categorized as economically disadvantaged.? The study showed that according to a recent AIES report 34% of the students at Garrison High School are considered ?at risk? learners.? The school is composed of a diverse population but consist of 68% White and 18% African American.? The school is also composed of 10% Hispanic, 1% Asian/Pacific, .7% Native American, and 1.7% other.? The school experienced a significant let down 3 years ago in relation to the performance of the economically disadvantage students.? The High School Campus found itself on the verge of being labeled Academically Unacceptable according to Title I NCLB law.? The low performance scores resulted in the school using a collaborative approach to meet the needs of these students.? The school created a SBDM Committee to research ways to better accommodate these students needs.? In review of the AEIS report it is evident that the school system actively met the needs of the economically disadvantaged population.? The scores of all students meeting the standards have improved from 73% in 2010 to 90% in 2011.? The impact shows that a clear vision and the implementation of goals can lead to positive results.

The issue concerning the students at Garrison High School in 2011 revolves around the African American population.? The target area of discussion will be the exit level TAKS scores of mathematics.? According to the AIES report African American scores have dropped consistently over the last 3 years.? The report suggests that African American scores have dropped from 91% in 2009 to 85% in 2010.? The scores for African American students again dropped in 2011 and were reported at 81% meeting the standards.? The school is aware of these low performance scores but has recently experienced a change in administration.? The current administration has not taken the time to conduct data driven studies to brainstorm ways for improvement.? It will be very important to create a collaborative approach to reaching out to these students to increase achievement in the near future.? The school again found itself near the Academically Unacceptable rating due to the falling scores of the African American population in mathematics.? The school will need to again find ways to reach out to the struggling population of students.

The action research project that was conducted was geared toward improving African American scores, as well as all low performance students.? The study targeted students performance on the exit level mathematics section of the standardize test.? The project determined if student understanding was monitored properly throughout the year.? The study proved to be a very important source of information and data studies are now being conducted in all subject areas.?????????

The action research project benefited many stakeholders throughout the implementation year.? The person?s experiencing benefits will include: students, staff, and the school system.? The action research project monitored the results from the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years in the subject of mathematics. The study proved that students performance on regularly scheduled benchmarks and standardized test scores were directly related.? The information was broken down, using DMAC, by objective performance which provided teachers direct feedback from the information.? The study will show that there is a direct comparison of results between benchmarks and standardized testing.? The study proved that benchmarks are correctly aligned with TEKS and directly reflect knowledge and understanding.? The study added to the knowledge that more emphasis should be placed on benchmarking results. In 2012 the school conducted 3 benchmarks in the first semester and plans on conducting 2 benchmarks in the 2nd semester. Using the action research plan we will evaluated the results from the benchmarks in the first semester and create a list of students for tutorials.? Tutorials will then be held 2 times a week for 6 weeks prior to the mandated testing day.? Students should benefit greatly from the extra instruction time and teachers will be able to increase the rigor of the advanced students.? The results from the benchmarks in the 2nd semester should show vast improvements from the first semester, proving that this method of instruction is improving student achievement. The school is currently in the process of evaluating all results of benchmarks from the first semester and creating a list of students for tutorials. ??????????

The Act requires states to develop assessments in basic skills. a SBDM committee makes decisions. SBDM committees make important decisions regarding their particular campus' needs. These decisions can apply to anything ranging from a simple funding request for new team uniforms to more complex requests such as the hiring of more faculty members.

TAKS-

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which are the state standards for what students should know and be able to do Literature Review (Section Two)

In evaluating the results from the action research project there were several pieces of literature that expressed concerns about issue revolving around the public school system.?? The literature supported and maintained the importance of having a properly trained staff to implement the improvement process.? Literature also suggests the importance of evaluating data in order to impact the best possible decisions.? Below will be a review of literature used in the action research study that greatly influences outcomes.??

Rooney, J. (2008). What do We Believe? Joanne Rooney

According to Rooney 2008, we too must tear ourselves away from the paper, e-mail, phone calls, and meeting that jam our days to participate in meaningful professional development, lest we, too, keep relying on information learned for and in a different era.? The literature suggests that it is important for staff to take time to become properly trained to deal with the diversity of the student population.? Student?s needs are like a revolving door and become more diverse and demanding on a day to day basis.? Rooney 2008 also suggests that it is important to communicate the vision of the program or district with all stakeholders.? All stakeholders must know and understand their role in the improvement process.? The common goal of a project will help lead to success.?

Jennings, J. & Rentner, D. (2006). Ten Big Effects of the No Child Left Behind Act on Public Schools?

According to the Jennings and Rentner 2006 schools are paying much more attention to the alignment of curriculum and instruction and are analyzing test score data much more closely.? The most common improvements are greater alignment of curriculum and instruction with standards and assessments, more use of test data to modify instruction, use of research to inform decisions about improvement strategies, improvement in the quality and quantity of professional development for teachers, and the provision of more intensive instruction to low-achieving students.? In establishing the action research project the intern learned more than ever the importance of data analysis.? Staff properly trained in collecting and analyzing data will have an upper hand in establishing the direct needs of students. ?Decisions made based on collected data will have a direct impact on students needs.

The Education Trust (2004). The ABCs of AYP The Education Trust?

According to the Education Trust 2004 title I is a voluntary program that provides more than 12 billion per year to participating states that help educate low-income children.? States which receive Title I funding agree to commit themselves to the goal of bringing all student to proficiency in language arts and math by 2014.? According to the literature schools must communicate the vision and goals for improvement with parents.? The state begins by setting academic standards in deciding what all students should know and be able to do.? According to NCLB students need to learn many things to be successful but language arts and math are the building blocks for all further learning.? The text was very informative while conducting the current research project in describing AYP?s and Title I expectations.? The action research project was centered on the subject of mathematics due to the emphasis placed on this subject by state mandates.

Hess, F., & Gift, T. (2008). The Turnaround Fredrick M Hess and Thomas Gift??

According to Hess and Gift NCLB revolves around the notion that turnarounds constitute a new better way to solve problems facing America?s schools in gaining immense popularity among reformers of all stripes.? Unlike most reform efforts, which focus on incremental improvement, turnarounds seek to take school from bad to great within a short period.? ?Turnarounds offer the opportunity to take familiar educational institutions and improve them through coaching, mentoring, capacity building, best practices, and other existing tools.?? The information provided in the text was very beneficial in establishing the action research project.? The idea to provide tutorials for struggling students stemmed from the idea of coaching/mentoring students.? The idea of offering training for teachers also came from the idea of capacity building expressed in the article.? Hess and Gift also expressed the idea that staging a successful turnaround entails setting high expectations and then begin flexible with regard to how principals, teachers, and staff go about meeting them.? The expectations for the action research project were clearly outlined and understood by staff members.? The first step to improvement will always revolve around the communication process.?

Texas Education Agency, (2012), Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS) The Texas Education Agency website was very beneficial in establishing the basis for the action research project.? A researcher can collect information concerning any district in the state.? They can search and compare results based on performance records.? The website provides information regarding state mandates and also provides insight about changes to come in the Texas Education System. The Data Management for Assessment and Curriculum website was very beneficial in collecting????? information regarding previous benchmarks and testing results.? The information is broken down based on demographics which prove to be very informative when evaluating and comparing results.?? The information breaks down the information in an individualized report by subject.? The program requires a username and password in order for the school to participate.? The program is an awesome tool for schools wanting collect and analyze data on a regular basis.?? Action Research Design (Section Three)

Target Population: Struggling students enrolled in 11th grade mathematics which participate in the exit level mathematics portion of the TAKS test.

Target Size: 64 Students (Total Class Size)

MONITORING SUCCESS/ EVALUATION
  • From the results of the study the 11th Grade Math teacher better understood the significance of conducting benchmarks
  • The study revealed the results of benchmarks and standardized test scores were directly related and more emphasis will be placed on the benchmarks.
  • The study also revealed the results of benchmarks and standardized test scores were directly related proving that the curriculum is properly aligned

The data concerning the action research project was collected in several different ways.? The researcher believes that in order to receive appropriate relative data the information should be collected using multiple resources.? The first form of data collection came from using the online program DMAC.? The program breaks down information in regards to demographic results on benchmarks as well as state mandated testing.? The results collected from the study showed that the information was directly related meaning that students found struggling on benchmarks eventually struggled on the standardized test.? The data was broken down into individualized categories to determine which groups of students would need additional resources.? The action research project was directed at increasing the overall scores of African Americans but will serve the purpose of increasing the achievement of all students.? The second step to the data collection project was to evaluate the results from a student survey given to 11th grade test takers.? The survey was used as a gauge to monitor student?s actual feelings about benchmarks. The results of the study are listed:? 33% of the student population really participates, 67% of the student population answered that benchmark tests are meaningless.? The next step was to interview the current 11th grade math teacher.? During the interview there were several questions regarding the importance of benchmarks and what emphasis are placed upon them.? The DMAC data was presented to the teacher showing the comparable results from each study.? The information regarding the student surveys were also presented at the conclusion of the meeting.? The intern made the recommendation that the high school faculty collaborate new innovative ways to increase participation on benchmarks. The next step in the data collection process was to interview the curriculum director.? The information regarding the DMAC study and student surveys were presented to the curriculum director.? The director came to the conclusion that each teacher should be equipped with the knowledge to conduct their own data driven analysis studies.? The school is now currently conducted individualized data reports by subject area.? Once the data from all available resources was collected the intern developed an individualized performance chart showing areas of weakness.?

The information below will describe the research and progress related to the implementation of the action research project.? The charts below describe the total number of students tested and categorized the groups which struggle to achieve.? The charts include information from the 09-10 and 10-11 school years prior to implementation of the action research project.? The final chart upon completion of the project show the results since the implementation of the tutorial sessions for struggling students started.? The charts are imprinted below:?

Conclusions and Recommendations (Section Five) The action research will prove that once goals are set towards student weaknesses the achievement results will improve. ?The action research project is designed to research the comparison between regularly scheduled benchmarks and state mandated testing.? The action research project will prove there is a direct ?relationship between the benchmarks and standardized testing showing the school?s curriculum is properly aligned.? The intern will use several methods of data collection throughout the implementation process.? It was very beneficial to examine multiple resources before the implementation began.? Once the research was evaluated and itemized the project began to fall into place.?? The goal of the action research project is to increase the achievement of certain groups of students on benchmarks which would intern lead to better ?results on standardized tests.? The tutorials will provide a chance for these struggling students to be improve scores on standardized tests. Hopefully, the results from the previous year?s benchmarks will increase dramatically with the installation of tutorials.? I feel it will be very beneficial for the school to ?research other schools that have implemented tutorials as an event in the students scheduling.? ?I also feel as though it will be important for the school system to research ways in which benchmarks can become more meaningful for student performance.? After reviewing the results from the survey the intern learned that a large percentage of the student population puts forth not effort in regards to benchmarks. The school should collaboratively come up with ways in which more emphasis can be placed on benchmarks in the near future as they are a direct reflection of performance on the state mandated test. ?I feel as though the research project proved to be very beneficial for the school system.?? I would recommend that each teacher and school system actively conduct research projects to better understand the weaknesses of the student population.? The first step in finding a solution to a problem is being able to indentify that a problem exist.?
