Is College Worth the Money?

Right around this time every year, new graduates leave their ivory towers for the "real world."

Most graduates have dreams of making their mark, but also hear horror stories of unemployed millennials moving in with Mom or using their master's degree as a barista in a coffee shop. In today's changing economy, is higher education really worth it?

From more money to delayed innovation, here are some of the pros and cons of higher education.

Jumping on opportunities

College dropouts founded Facebook, Apple and Microsoft for a reason. In technology, there is frequently a right time for an idea to take off, and waiting four years to complete a college education can mean missing out on those opportunities, said Mike Gibson, the vice president for grants at the Thiel Foundation, which provides $100,000 grants to budding entrepreneurs in order to skip college and pursue their dreams. [Creative Genius: The World's Greatest Minds]

Younger people are also more likely to be free of commitments, so they can pull all-nighters and work longer hours than those raising a family, Gibson said.

Less innovation

College may also be slowing down innovation, at least in the sciences, Gibson said.

In a 2008 working paper, Northwestern University management professor Benjamin Jones found that the age at which scientists patent their first inventions?has gone up since the turn of the last century, from 23 to 32. That huge jump is likely because more and more people are stuck in college and graduate school when they would have had their "eureka!" moment in the past. And people haven't simply shifted their productivity to later in life ? they are reducing their overall life contribution, the study suggests.

Safety school

Of course, most people who go to college don't want to make the next Facebook or reinvent the wheel; they want to do something interesting and take home a decent wage in the process. And there's no doubt the surest path toward steady income is to earn a four-year degree, research suggests.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2009, a high-school graduate earned a median of $30,627 a year, whereas college graduates earned higher income, a median of $56,665. And a 2010 study from Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce found that 60 percent of all jobs in the country required higher education.

More jobs

Jobs that require just a high-school degree are disappearing, but those requiring post-secondary education are increasing. The Georgetown study predicted that by 2018, 22 million new jobs would be created that require college degrees, but at least 3 million fewer people would earn college diplomas or bachelor degrees. All in all, degree holders will have many more opportunities than those who drop out.

Crushing debt

On the negative side, all of that education has a price tag. Going to college often means taking on tens of thousands of dollars of debt.

"Recently, total student loans hit the $1 trillion threshold," Gibson told LiveScience, referring to U.S. student loans. "That's more than credit card debt."

In a 2012 Pew Internet survey that interviewed about 1,000 higher education experts,?75 percent of respondents said higher education was too expensive for most people to afford.

Online option?

Sticker shock has some questioning whether higher education can be acquired online at a fraction of the usual price. Massive online course providers such as Coursera and Udacity now offer hundreds of classes that can be taken for free while students lounge at home in sweatpants. Some believe these classes will replace many of the requirements in traditional two-year and four-year colleges. In the Pew study, roughly 60 percent believed that online coursework would change higher education by 2020.

"There was a strong sense that, at a minimum, blended coursework ? some combination of offline and online coursework ? was going to be the reality for many students," said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, which conducted the survey.

No regrets

Still, very few people who have earned a four-year degree regret it, Pew's research suggests.

"By and large, people who have gone to college think it was a valuable experience," Rainie said.

Tim Cook Hints That Apple Is Working On Wearable Computers ...

Wearable computers are somewhat of a fad these days. It?s hard to say if it will be a fad a year from now, but Apple is researching ways to capitalize on the trend it if happens to grow.

Reuters reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted that wearable computers were on the tech giant?s shortlist of new products this week during an All Things Digital conference. He didn?t come right out and say that Apple was working on a smartwatch, but he did say that his company is working on ?several more game changers.?

So, what would an Apple-made wearable computer look like? It won?t be anything like Google Glass or other wearable computers. He said ?there?s nothing that?s going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch to wear one.? In other words, slapping a computer onto a watch isn?t suddenly going to make somebody want to wear a watch. Cook said that ?there?s lots of things to solve in this space,? so Apple is obviously researching how to make wearable computers cool.

That?s always what Apple has done best ? making nerdy things cool. You could argue that Google Glass is really cool, but then a bunch of pasty white nerds make it not so cool anymore. An Apple iWatch or whatever it?s called would have to convince people that it?s cool to wear something that?s inherently nerdy on their person at all times.

Of course, there?s always the possibility that Apple may just give up on its plans to release a wearable computer. It was impossible to make a calculator watch cool in the 80s, and it may be just as impossible to make smartwatches cool today.

Google revamps Gmail with tabbed inbox on desktop and mobile

Image

Organization is the key to a happy inbox, and Google's taking you one step closer to that stress-free experience. The company announced today that it'll be bringing a new tabbed layout to the desktop and mobile versions of Gmail, safely filing messages where they belong. The redesign lets you add up to five tabs, reorganizing them via drag-and-drop. You can set senders to appear in specific tabs and can move messages up to the primary one with a star. The upgrade is coming to the desktop, Android and iOS version of Gmail in "the next few weeks," though you can get a sneak peek on your desktop earlier by watching the mail program's gear / settings menu in the interim. There's also a video detailing the updates after the break, if you're so inclined.

Lipitor, statins, and exercise - Health - MensJournal.com

The effects of statins on exercise benefits.

Doctors say statins, the most widely prescribed type of cholesterol-lowering drugs, have prevented millions of heart attacks and saved countless lives. But a new study published in the 'Journal of the American College of Cardiology' found that these meds, including Lipitor, may also counteract the benefits of exercise, the other tried-and-true way to boost cardiac health.

Researchers started a small group of overweight, sedentary adults at risk of developing high cholesterol or blood pressure on a 12-week aerobic program. They also put half of the patients on simvastatin, sold commercially as Zocor. By the study's end, the exercise-only group's VO2 Max, a measure of aerobic fitness, had increased 10 percent, while the group also taking simvastatin had only seen a 1.5 percent improvement. The statin users' muscle function also decreased 4.5 percent while the first group's shot up 13 percent.

"Our research suggests that statins block exercise's ability to increase mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the cell and where oxygen is consumed and converted to energy so that muscles can contract," explains senior study author John Thyfault, professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at the University of Missouri. "Typically, exercise increases mitochondrial content in muscle, which allows for improved fitness."

And improving fitness is clutch, says Thyfault. "For disease and mortality risk, the literature is increasingly clear that fitness is the most important measure, not cholesterol or other single risk factors," he says.

If that's the case, then these findings seem to create a conundrum. Should someone on statins not bother exercising? Should a person with disease risk factors or a family history of health ailments skip the statins and hit the treadmill instead?

According to Thyfault, the answers aren't cut and dry. Statins may have blunted the patients' mitochondrial production and aerobic capacity, but that doesn't mean they blackballed all benefits of exercise. The group experiencing decreased aerobic rewards for their workouts was still burning calories.

"I would not take these results to mean that everyone should stop exercising if taking statins," says Dr. Christine Lawless, co-chair of the American College of Cardiology's Council on Sports and Exercise Cardiology. "Just because statins hindered mitochondria production, we can't say exercise's benefits were totally negated. The positive effects on the heart and longevity could still be there, as well as how much better people can feel after exercising."

Lawless points out that this research focused on just a small group of people and that the medical community considers statins to be extraordinarily safe. Lawless actually believes statins are under-prescribed, given the amount of evidence showing they're helpful.

Still, Thyfault feels people shouldn't be overly eager to take statins like Torvast, Crestor, and Lipostat: "I would suggest that people be cautious if their cholesterol is not high or even borderline."

Family: Ariz. mom framed in Mexico pot bust after attending funeral

(CNN)?? The family of an Arizona mother of seven being held in a Mexican jail vehemently denies charges that she was trying to smuggle about 12 pounds of marijuana back into the United States.

?It?s about getting money here,? Yanira Maldonado?s husband, Gary Maldonado, told CNN?s ?Starting Point? Tuesday.

A Mexican state official also believes Yanira Maldonado was framed.

On Tuesday, Maldonado has a court hearing, after which she may find out whether she will go free or remain jailed until a trial.

Mexican authorities arrested Maldonado Wednesday as she and her husband were on their way back from a family funeral.

During a search of their bus at a military checkpoint in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, authorities asked everyone to get off.

At first, authorities told Gary Maldonado that marijuana had been found under his seat and arrested him, his father, Larry Maldonado, told CNN. After the father contacted the U.S. Consulate in Hermosillo, Mexico, authorities said they were mistaken and released Gary.

Then, they charged his wife.

Gary Maldonado said he believes Mexican soldiers manning the checkpoint wanted a bribe.

?From what I hear, that?s a regular occurrence,? he said.

Questions about arrest

A Sonora state official with extensive knowledge of the case told CNN there are questions about the arrest.

?Can you imagine?? asked the official, who was not authorized to speak to the media and did not want to be named. ?A passenger by himself or herself would have been unable to carry almost six kilos of marijuana onto a bus without being noticed. She must?ve been framed.?

The husband, Gary, was told by authorities that regardless of his wife?s guilt or innocence, he would have to pay $5,000 to secure her freedom, the family said.

He was able to cobble together the money but then was told it was too late. His wife had been transferred to another jail.

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake is monitoring the case, his office said.

?Senator Flake is personally monitoring the situation, and he has had multiple conversations with the deputy Mexican ambassador this weekend,? Flake?s office said.

Fears grips family

But all this has not changed the situation for Yanira Maldonado or lessened the fears of her family.

?She?s not happy where she?s at but she has high hopes she?ll be free,? Gary Maldonado said.

Brandon Klippel, Maldonado?s brother-in-law, says the family has hired a lawyer in Mexico but still is very worried because they do not fully understand the local legal system.

At the court hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Klippel said, a judge will decide whether to release Maldonado or hold her in custody for four months until a trial.

A local lawyer has told them that Maldonado can request a 72-hour extension to delay that decision.

?We?re worried that Yanira may not know that she?s the one that needs to request this,? said Klippel. ?If they don?t extend the 72 hours, (the judge) will make the decision whether she can go free tomorrow or will be transported to a prison in south Mexico.?

Emotional visits

On Saturday, Maldonado?s daughter, Anna Soto, said she visited her mother in jail.

?I broke down in tears, but she just told me that she was going to get out,? Soto said Monday in an emotional interview with CNN?s Wolf Blitzer.

?She wanted to tell my brothers and sisters that she loved them very much. My biggest fear is that I will never get to see her again ?

The next day, other family members paid Maldonado a visit.

They were told they would have hours to talk with her, but when they arrived they were given only 10 minutes, Klippel said.

?She was at a wire window with her fingertips up through the holes, touching her son?s hand with one hand and touching her husband?s hand with the other,? Klippel said. ?She was just saying, ?I don?t know how this happened to me. I?ve never done anything illegal in my life. Why has this happened???

?She?s innocent,? Soto said. ?She?s an honest good woman. A Christian woman that would never do anything to jeopardize her freedom.?

ECB: Eurozone still 'fragile' as reforms lag

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The European Central Bank says the continent's financial system remains fragile and exposed to risks including a sudden drop in currently buoyant stock and bond markets as well as trouble among banks as they face more bad loans in a weak economy.

The ECB's latest financial stability review said Wednesday that the weakening of the banking sector is a key risk factor that could cause a flare-up in the 17 country eurozone's 3? year crisis over too much government debt.

The cost of rescuing banks is one of the sources of the crisis, having overwhelmed the public finances of several European governments.

To ease those concerns, the ECB has pushed for the creation of stronger banking regulation at the EU level that would shield a single government's public finances from the costs of expensive bailouts for banks. Next year, the ECB is expected to take over as centralized banking supervisor. European officials are still deciding on a second key element of the reform, an agency that could restructure banks and distribute losses among their creditors so that taxpayers can be spared.

That system isn't in place yet, and the ECB emphasized that the current drop in banks' earnings is a key concern. It said the percentage of banks' loans that do not get repaid has risen in several countries, mainly because the economy was weakening.

The ECB said national governments have made some progress in cutting deficits but need to continue those efforts, as well as press ahead with pro-growth reforms that can improve competitiveness. Slowing those efforts could reignite market tensions and raise bond market borrowing costs for governments.

Troubled countries "have made considerable efforts to adjust their public finances," the report said, but added that "this should not unravel now."

It also said the financial system could face stress from a sudden reversal of the recent strong gains in markets. Stock and bond markets have rallied globally in recent months as investors cheered the efforts of major central banks to steady the world economy. During such rallies, traders put their money in higher risk investments ? such as stocks ? as they search for higher returns. Interest rates are very low due to benchmark rate reductions by central banks, meaning conservative investments such as a savings account or U.S. Treasury bonds yield little.

Trouble would arise, however, if that willingness to seek out more risk suddenly goes into reverse.

The ECB warned that banks should make sure they have enough financial padding to absorb potential losses in case of a sharp drop in financial markets.

MSNBC Analyst Calls Virginia GOP Lieutenant Governor Nominee a ?Black Puppet?

by Noel Sheppard | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 5/27/13 5:23 PM

MSNBC political analyst Michael Eric Dyson on Saturday called Virginia Republican lieutenant governor nominee E.W. Jackson a ?black puppet? His mouth is moving but white supremacist ideology is floating through it.?

Such occurred on the Ed Show (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ED SCHULTZ, HOST: Our next topic, Bishop E.W. Jackson, Republican nominee for lieutenant governor in Virginia. Jackson has no experience as an elected official, but he does have a history of making factually incorrect, inflammatory, anti-gay, anti-Obama statements. He could fit right in with the right-wing. Take a look at this video message he posted last year.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BISHOP E.W. JACKSON: The message to Christians in the black community: it is time to end the slavish devotion to the Democrat Party? The Democrat Party has created an unholy alliance between certain so-called civil rights leaders and Planned Parenthood which has killed unborn black babies by the tens of millions. Planned Parenthood has been far more lethal to black lives than the KKK ever was.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SCHULTZ: Dr. Dyson, what?s going on here? Is this an attempt to make this Ken Cuccinelli, this year?s Republican nominee for governor, look less extreme, because he?s a hard righty too? What about this?

MICHAEL ERIC DYSON: Yeah, the philosopher Jay-Z had it right. We don?t believe you, you need more people. We don?t even know you. You pop out of nowhere. The Republicans seem incapable of making any kind of planning. You?re talking about Oklahoma where they won?t even have $12.9 billion for disaster mitigation because they didn?t want to study.

Planned Parenthood is not about abortions. It?s about cervical cancer screenings. It?s about breast cancer screenings. And it?s about planned, teaching people how to be parents. Now here you got E.W. Jackson puffing up, and here?s a guy who?s a black puppet. He?s a vent, he?s being ventriloquized. His mouth is moving but white supremacist ideology is floating through it, and the most repressive sorts of ideas that we can imagine are being evoked here. Black people are not dumb. Just because you put a black face on buffoonery, we still know the color of ignorance.

You want to talk about ignorance? Let?s talk about ignorance.

For example, does Dyson know that the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, was a eugenicist who advocated the sterilization of those she deemed ?unfit??

CLICK LIKE IF YOU?RE PRO-LIFE!

?

Are Dyson and Schultz willing to present statistics to MSNBC viewers indicating that since 1973, as many as 16 million black babies have been aborted?

Or that in the past three years alone, Planned Parenthood is responsible for at least 1 million black abortions?

Exactly who is exhibiting buffoonery and adding to the ignorance of the population?

Suspected rebels kill 28, wound 24 in east India

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Officials reacted with outrage Sunday to an audacious attack by about 200 suspected Maoist rebels who set off a roadside bomb and opened fire on a convoy carrying Indian ruling Congress party leaders and members in an eastern state, killing 28 people and wounding 24 others.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accompanied by party President Sonia Gandhi, visited the injured in a hospital in the capital of Chhattisgarh state and said the government would take firm action against the perpetrators.

"We are devastated," said Gandhi, who denounced what she called a "dastardly attack" on the country's democratic values.

Rajnath Singh, president of opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, said the country should unite in its fight against the Maoist insurgency.

The convoy was attacked Saturday in a densely forested area about 215 miles (345 kilometers) south of Raipur, Chhattisgarh's capital, as the Congress members were returning from a party rally.

Four state party leaders and five police officers were among those killed. Other victims were party supporters.

Police identified one of those dead as Mahendra Karma, a Congress leader in Chhattisgarh who founded a local militia, the Salwa Judum, to combat the Maoist rebels. The anti-rebel militia had to be reined in after it was accused of atrocities against tribals - indigenous people at the bottom of India's rigid social ladder.

The dead also included state Congress party chief Nand Kumar Patel and his son. The injured included former federal minister Vidya Charan Shukla, 83, police said.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the attackers blocked the road by felling trees, forcing the convoy to halt. Police officer R.K. Vij said the suspected rebels triggered a land mine that blew up one of the cars. The attackers then fired at the Congress party leaders and their supporters before fleeing.

The Congress party is the main opposition party in the state. It has stepped up political activities, trying to win the support of tribals, ahead of state elections scheduled to be held by December.

K.P.S. Gill, a former police chief of Punjab state who has written widely on reform, said the attack was "a very horrifying incident."

However, Gill said the state government was incapable of devising a strategy to tackle the Maoist threat. "They don't have the political will and bureaucratic and police set-up to prevent such attacks," he said.

Prime Minister Singh has called the rebels India's biggest internal security threat. They are now present in 20 of India's 28 states and have thousands of fighters, according to the Home Ministry.

The rebels, known as Naxalites, have been fighting the central government for more than four decades, demanding land and jobs for tenant farmers and the poor. They take their name from the West Bengal village of Naxalbari where the movement began in 1967.

The fighters were inspired by Chinese Communist revolutionary leader Mao Zedong and have drawn support from displaced tribal populations opposed to corporate exploitation and official corruption.

The government has offered to begin peace talks with the rebels, but without success. The Maoists demand that it first withdraw thousands of paramilitary soldiers deployed to fight the rebels.

Maoist rebels carried out two major attacks in Chhattisgarh in 2010. They ambushed a paramilitary patrol in April that year, killing 76 troops in their worst attack ever. A month later, they triggered a land mine under a bus carrying civilians and police, killing 31.

San Jose Sharks Beat L.A. Kings 2-1 To Force Game 7 (VIDEO)

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? Buoyed by a loud crowd and another early power-play goal, the San Jose Sharks matched Los Angeles' three home wins with a third straight victory over the Kings at the Shark Tank.

Now this all-California series comes down to a winner-take-all game on Los Angeles' home ice.

Joe Thornton got San Jose off to a fast start with a power-play goal in the first period and TJ Galiardi added a goal in the second to help the Sharks force a decisive seventh game with a 2-1 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions Sunday night.

"We wanted this opportunity," said Joe Pavelski, who set up Thornton's goal. "We wanted to go play. We feel like we've played some good games there before. It's been a while since we've won, so we're due."

Antti Niemi made 24 saves as the Sharks earned their third 2-1 home win of the series.

Game 7 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles. While the Kings seemingly have the advantage of home ice that has been so paramount this series, road teams in NHL history are 8-8 in seventh games of series where the home team has won the first six games, according to STATS LLC.

"It's followed the script. Home team wins back and forth," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "It's time for us to get there and try to change the story. We're going to have to play a much better game than we did last time in that building. But they earned the right for home-ice. It's our job to take it away from them."

Dustin Brown scored the lone goal for Los Angeles and Jonathan Quick made 24 saves. The Kings have lost 11 of 12 road games but have been unbeatable at home, winning all six playoff games and 13 straight at Staples Center since the end of the regular season.

"It's come down to one game," forward Mike Richards said. "We're a confident, comfortable team at home. The fans are loud and behind us. It should be an exciting game."

The Kings tried to end it in San Jose, putting pressure on Niemi early in the final period in search of the equalizer. But they couldn't break through against a strong forecheck late to the delight of the loud crowd chanting "Beat LA! Beat LA!" from the start of the night.

Los Angeles managed just one shot on goal in the final 2:50.

"We showed more push than in the past when we kind of sat on the lead a little bit more. I liked it," defenseman Dan Boyle said. "We talked about it. We always talked about it. We had a little push there and had a few looks in the third."

After taking a 1-0 lead early, the Sharks went more than 15 minutes without a shot before regaining their stride early in the second period. Galiardi beat Quick with a wrist shot from the faceoff circle for his first career playoff goal to make it 2-0 and San Jose had a chance to break the game open when Justin Williams was sent to the box for a double-minor high-sticking penalty.

But Quick and the Kings killed off all 4 minutes of power-play time and then got back into the game with just over 6 minutes left in the second when Brown banked a shot from behind the goal line off Niemi and into the net.

"Every game has been close," Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi said. "I'm sure it's not a shock it's come to a Game 7. I'm sure both teams didn't want it to go this far. Right now, it doesn't matter how we win it, just that we win it."

The Sharks started fast thanks to three early power plays and the desperation of an elimination game to continue the trend in this series of the home team scoring first when they converted on a two-man advantage. With Richards already in the box for tripping Brent Burns, Anze Kopitar shot a puck over the glass for a delay-of-game penalty.

San Jose patiently worked the puck around during the 5-on-3 advantage and took the lead when Joe Pavelski slid a pass across the goalmouth to Thornton, who shot it in from the side of the net to end a drought of 102:14 dating to the second period in Game 4.

"The 5-on-3 in the first few minutes was big. We're just trying to slap down the ice but things like that happen," Scuderi said. "We were trying to limit their start in this building but that got the fans into it early and that hurt us."

The Sharks were lucky that lead held up for the period as they were scrambling after that in part because of an injury that knocked defenseman Justin Braun out for the final 16 minutes of the period.

Los Angeles took the last eight shots of the period, with Niemi making two tough saves to rob Trevor Lewis on the power play and also stopping Kyle Clifford on a rebound in close. The Kings also were unlucky, hitting three posts in the period.

NOTES: The Kings haven't allowed more than three goals in 32 straight playoff games, starting with last year's run to the Stanley Cup. ... Braun returned in the second period. ... F Adam Burish returned for the Sharks for the first time since breaking his right hand in Game 4 of the first round against Vancouver. ... Niemi got an assist on Galiardi's goal for his first career playoff point. He joins Mike Vernon and Evgeni Nabokov as Sharks goalies to record a point in the playoffs.

Serbia holds funeral for Yugoslavia's last king

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Serbia held a funeral on Sunday for Yugoslavia's last king, Peter II Karadjordjevic, who had fled the country at the start of World War II and died in the U.S. in 1970.

The former king's remains, and those of his wife, mother and brother, were interred in the family tomb at St. George church in Oplenac, central Serbia, in a ceremony aired live on the state television.

The funeral was attended by top state officials, who described it as an act of reconciliation and unity.

After fleeing Yugoslavia during its Nazi occupation, the former king never returned because Communists took over the country at the end of the war and abolished the monarchy.

He died in exile at the age of 47 and was buried at a Serbian Orthodox Church monastery in Libertyville, Illinois ? the only European monarch laid to rest on U.S. soil.

"We can no longer afford any divisions and injustice," President Tomislav Nikolic said in a speech at Sunday's ceremony.

Peter was born into a royal family, and his godfather was Britain's King George VI, but his life was often tragic and chaotic.

He was only 11 years old when his father, King Alexander I, was assassinated in 1934 in Marseilles, France. For the next six years the boy's powers were in the hands of a three-man regency headed by his uncle, Prince Paul.

In March 1941, Prince Paul was overthrown in a military coup after signing a pact with Germany.

Peter, then 17, was made the king by the Serb anti-fascists. But when Germany invaded Yugoslavia in April 1941, Peter was forced to flee, first to Greece, then to Egypt, then to Britain, where he headed the government-in-exile. He later lived in France and ended up in the U.S.

History books portray him as a figurehead leader and a victim of cunning politicians.

Six Ways to Jump Start Your Family History Research - Pet Menagerie

News from around the web.
Go to Source
?

Are you brand new to genealogy and not quite sure where to start? Maybe you?ve been doing this for a while and need some inspiration to help you break through that long standing brick wall. As we head into the long weekend, I plan on spending a little time working on my own family history research. If you are going to do the same, here are six ideas to help jump start your genealogy weekend.

.

1. Talk to your family

Memorial Day was originally a time to pause and remember those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Many of us now use it as a time to memorialize any of our loved ones who have passed on. Still others use the three day weekend to get together with living family members. If you fall into that last category, take advantage of the time you spend with family this weekend to talk to them. Record their stories. Go through that box of pictures and see who they can identify. Ask if anyone knows about a family bible or copies of military service records held by someone in the family. Then take a picture of those people or those documents and attach them to your tree. Speaking of attaching things to your tree?

.

2. Document your work

That shaky leaf leads to a record hint. Record hints need to be analyzed and considered in context to determine if they really pertain to your person. Then they need to be attached. (Don?t forget that step.) Also, remember that those shaky leaves only provide hints to a small percentage of our most popular databases. There are more records to find. Be sure to search for your family members. Which brings me to?

.

3. Try a new search technique

I often find myself in a groove. I find something that works and I stick with it. But, I?ve learned that when I try something new, I usually learn something new and, sometimes, I discover something new as well. If you always view your search results by record try viewing them by category. If you only check the Card Catalog to find what databases are available, try using the place pages. If you aren?t sure how to search or you aren?t getting the search results you expect?

.

4. Watch a video

There?s a video for that. If you aren?t quite sure how to find your immigrant ancestors, there?s a video for that. Need some tips on creating memorial pages to honor the men and women in your family tree who have served in the armed forces? There?s a video for that, too. Ancestry.com has a library full of helpful videos and tutorials that just might give you the information you?ve been looking for or that spark of an idea to help you break down that brick wall. And, while we are discussing brick walls?

.

5. Post your brick wall

Have you posted yours to the appropriate surname or locality message board? The process of writing out what you know, how you know it, and what you are trying to find out is a super useful exercise that might help you see your genealogy challenge in a new light.?Posting it to a message board?gives you the opportunity to interact with thousands of others who are researching that same surname or that same small county in West Virginia. You never know who may have the information you need.

.

6. Sign up for a genealogy conference

We are smack dab in the middle of the genealogy conference season. There are opportunities ? large and small ? all around to attend a conference or Ancestry Day, interact with others who are interested in genealogy and learn some new skills that will help you in your family history journey.

.

Which of these are you going to try this weekend?

Let me tell you a secret - I used to find it extremely difficult, unpleasant even, when people talk about money and God in the same breath. I mean, didn?t one scripture verse command, "Thou shall not serve both God and money?" If this were the case, will the successful entrepreneur making a living to provide his family a good life be condemned? Are either needy and noble, or wealthy and lost?

As man continued to grow in knowledge, information regarding biblical prosperity got clearer and clearer. Fortunately, man doesn't have to starve for the salvation of his soul. In fact, God says He desires to bless you with more than enough - with overflowing abundance and prosperity.

So we ask, what then does God say about money and possessions? Several bible verses relating to biblical prosperity give us the answers. First of all, God wants His people to prosper (Genesis 12:1-3; Psalm 35:27; John 10:10). Once there was a man God called out to a foreign land and he obeyed. His name was Abraham. His faith was rewarded with so much wealth and favor among men; he also got his most cherished gift?a beloved son. As you can see, God provided this miracle for Abraham on top of all his blessings because God is a generous God.

Tithing is an essential part in walking in God's plan of prosperity (Leviticus 27:30; Malachi 10:10). Of course God does not need money. He owns the whole universe he has no use for money. He has use for faith. Tithing reflects this and this gives God something to work with in pouring out blessings into your life. It?s uncomfortable at first but God will always provide for those who trust in Him.

Tithing is a seed. So is your obedience to His laws, your offerings and your participation in bringing His message of Love to His people. Remember, you reap what you sow and a harvest is coming for the faithful. Whatever you have given is recorded and you will be blessed for it. It is not that you are paying to be blessed; you are giving to a God who will bless you according to His riches not yours so you can afford to be generous yourself.

Before God can bless you with prosperity you need to ask yourself honestly, can God trust you with it? You need to be a faithful steward even with the little you have (mark 10:17; Luke 12:48; 1 Timothy 6:17) so that when your breakthrough comes your heart is prepared. Enjoy the comfort things and material possessions can give you, but do not let it take first place in your life. It?s not bad to have money, but do not make building your fortune your life. You cannot serve both God and money so serve God and make money serve you.

And finally, God Himself gives us the power to create wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18; 2 Corinthians 8; Philippians 4:14-18) for the intent that we too can be a blessing to others. You will enjoy success in your life while allowing yourself to be a conduit of God?s work for others. There is no worthier cause than this.

The reason for abundance and prosperity is to make the world beautiful, not just for ourselves but for other people as well. Do not preoccupy yourself unnecessarily with the pursuit of money - it will find you. Aspire instead for obedience, faith and a deeper relationship with God and your fellow man, these are the true riches you cannot put a price on.

Insight: The maverick challenging Spanish politics

By Fiona Ortiz and Elisabeth O'Leary

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's rising political star is a 61-year-old former Socialist whose message of changing the system from within is drawing voters in despair at economic ruin and official corruption in the euro zone's fourth biggest economy.

Lacking the raucous anti-establishment appeal of Italy's Beppe Grillo and Greek leftist hero Alexis Tsipras, Rosa Diez relies on sharp debate to deliver her reform message to a country pushed to the brink by the euro zone debt crisis.

Diez split from the Socialist party six years ago and formed the centrist Union for Democracy and Progress, or UPyD.

Polls show she is Spain's most highly regarded politician at a time when a quarter of workers are out of a job and public disenchantment with the political class is rising, as is the caseload of judges investigating allegations of official graft.

Projections by Metroscopia polling firm show that if elections were held now, Diez's party could take as many as 30 seats in the 350 seat parliament, up from five at present.

The former Communists the United Left could quadruple its presence to 48 seats, perhaps forcing one of Spain's two main political forces, the socialists or the centre-right People's Party, to form a coalition government for the first time.

Although the bigger parties will expect to win back support during campaigning for the 2015 vote, the growing impact of smaller parties is bringing about a dramatic and permanent change in the political landscape.

"The two-party system has suffocated democracy and people know that. A huge majority of Spanish citizens want a radical change in the political system," Diez said in an interview with Reuters.

She cultivates a maverick image - an asymmetrical haircut and each fingernail painted a different color - but her politics are far from revolutionary. She defines herself as a social-liberal who endorses free-market economics.

SPANISH EXCEPTION

When Spain returned to democracy in the 1970s after Francisco Franco's dictatorship, the electoral system was set up to guarantee stability by limiting proportionality and favoring two major parties.

Over the past 36 years the People's Party - which currently has an absolute majority in parliament - and the Socialists carved up power and controlled everything from savings banks to the justice system. To pass laws they counted on votes from nationalist parties from the wealthy Basque and Catalan regions, which received extensive self-governing powers in return.

The challenge to that long-running status quo in Spain reflects political upheaval all over Europe, where populists and extremists have tapped into public rejection of austerity measures, immigration, recession and unemployment.

In Britain, a far-right campaign to leave the European Union has gained ground; comedian-turned-activist Grillo has became a major force in Italy; and in Greece radical leftists and ultra-nationalists are growing in influence.

The economic picture in Spain is among the bleakest after a construction boom turned to bust, draining the banks and pushing up corporate insolvencies. Unemployment is around 27 percent. Madrid sought 42 billion euros in international assistance last year to put the financial system on an even keel.

But while the rise of smaller parties has meant destabilizing fragmentation and shaky coalitions in countries such as Italy and Greece, in Spain the recent shadow of fascism means there is little appetite for extremism.

Here, the increased weight of alternative voices could be a sign of maturing democracy, some observers say.

"It's going to be very difficult for the two big parties to recover legitimacy. Governing will be more difficult in the future but I'm skeptical of an Italian scenario. Spaniards are wary of extremism," said Antonio Barroso, a London-based political analyst at Teneo Intelligence, an advisory firm.

Diez's father was imprisoned for his political beliefs under Franco and she says she was "nursed on politics."

After Franco died and Spain finally held elections - in 1977 - Diez said "it was only logical" for her to run for office. She has been in politics ever since.

Still, she has managed to paint herself as an outsider and draw support from both the left and the right for her pro-European views and centrist line. She defines herself as a social-liberal who endorses free-market economics, progressive individual liberties and a social safety net.

"I voted for her because she's very charismatic. She's daring and different and I thought she would break barriers and do different things. I was totally disappointed with the two main parties," said Jose Miguel Delgado, 47, an industrial technician.

RECKLESS BANKS

Diez has tapped into public outrage over the costly bailout for banks that loaned recklessly during the real-estate boom.

"She has a great nose for social change and is able to convert that into party ideology," says a political rival who has worked with her in parliament for many years.

Diez's party has brought a lawsuit against former board members of Bankia, a major Spanish bank that almost collapsed last year and received the biggest bailout in the country's history.

The rescue came just as the government was cutting spending on hospitals and schools and rising numbers of Spaniards were out of work, defaulting on their mortgages and losing their homes.

The People's Party (PP) has seen its support dwindle to some 29 percent from 45 percent in the last elections as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy takes unpopular economic measures. His credibility was also damaged by allegations that high-level executives in his party channeled cash donations from business leaders to party leaders. A judge is investigating the charges.

PEOPLE'S HERO

Spaniards are turning not only to alternative political leaders like Diez and Lara. They are also increasingly involved with social movements.

A new hero to many is Ada Colau, 39, leader of an activist group called the Mortgage Victims Platform that helps jobless mortgage defaulters fight the banks. Last year 39,000 families left their homes because of mortgage problems. Of those almost 3,000 were forcibly evicted.

Barcelona-based Colau, frequently seen on television at protests outside banks, says a sign of the impact her group has had is that a director at one of Spain's biggest banks consulted with the Platform on an affordable housing proposal.

The Platform has an approval rating of 71 percent, according to a recent opinion poll, while politicians in general are the very lowest rated institution in all of Spain, with a disapproval rating of 93 percent.

The influence of the Platform has alarmed the PP government.

PP Secretary General Maria Dolores de Cospedal accused the Platform of demagoguery and said they should legitimize themselves by forming a political party, an idea Colau rejects.

"People stop me on the street and ask me to run for office," Colau told Reuters. "But if I did, the only thing I'd be able to do every now and again would be to have a tantrum in Parliament. I'd have much less influence than I have now."

LIMITED ROLE

Diez, meanwhile, enjoys a high profile due to her weekly show-downs with the prime minister in televised parliamentary debates. Spaniards gave Diez a grade of 3.96 in a survey this month by Metroscopia. Premier Rajoy got a grade of 2.44, while Socialist leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba got a 3.00, and no politician beat Diez.

While she's well-regarded now, she may find it hard to maintain a simultaneous role as rebel and political operator.

Critics say Diez's rise will be limited by her focus on returning powers to the central government that have been ceded to regional governments in Catalonia and Basque Country, and by a lack of detail in her economic policy.

Diez rejects the criticism, pointing to her initiatives to shut down public companies and unnecessary institutions, simplify employment contracts to make hiring and firing cheaper for corporations, and standardize business rules across Spain.

She does acknowledge it will be difficult for her party to break into the big time unless Spain reforms election laws that make it hard for minority parties to get representation anywhere except the largest cities, Madrid and Barcelona.

Experts are skeptical there is any political will to overhaul the electoral system and destroy the PP and Socialist power bases in local governments around the country.

"If you have a society in which most people are benefiting from protectionism or favours from the political system, it's very difficult to see how that same system is going to remove those," said Dr. Jonathan Hopkin, a politics expert at the London School of Economics.

One arena where the UPyD and the United Left can both shine is in European Parliamentary elections next year, where they are expected to gain significant numbers of seats because that vote is run on a strictly proportional basis.

Heavy rain turns deadly in San Antonio

Raw chopper video shows rescuers coming to the aid of a man stranded on the roof of a building after floodwaters submerged the structure in San Antonio, Texas.

By Patrick Garrity and Christopher Nelson, NBC News

Two people are dead and 130 others were rescued from powerful flood waters after heavy rain pummeled the San Antonio area.

Flash-flooding swept cars and a city bus off main streets Saturday as storms dumped more than a foot of rain on the city in 24 hours.

One person, a 17-year-old, remains missing in the city of?Schertz, northeast of San Antonio.

The majority of rescues were people trapped in their vehicles in low-lying areas of the city, San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Christian Bove told NBC News.

Bove said a 29-year-old woman was trapped in her vehicle and tried to escape the rising water by climbing onto the car's roof. She was washed away, and her body was found down the road against a fence.

A woman in her mid-60s was found dead hours after her car was swept away in Leon Creek, Bove said. He said a rescue boat had just reached her car when the car rolled over, knocking the firefighters into the water. By the time they were able to get back into the boat, the car was submerged and they last sight of it, Bove said. ?

A San Antonio metro bus sits in floodwaters after it was swept off the road during heavy rains.

Bove said said dozens of homes suffered flood damage and part of the roof of an apartment building collapsed.

Flooding along the San Antonio River in Bexar County outside the city forced evacuation of more than 60 people, county spokeswoman Laura Jesse said. She said at least 16 people were rescued from vehicles but there were no reports of injuries or fatalities in the county.

A small tornado touched down in the suburb of Live Oak, causing minor damage to homes, a hospital and a medical building, the National Weather Service confirmed.

Weather Channel Meteorologist Nick Wiltgen said San Antonio received 12.16 inches of rain in the 24 hours ending at 11 a.m. Central Time on Saturday. That is just shy of the 24-hour record for the city of 13.35 inches in October 1998.

Bove said the city was expecting more rain overnight.

The Weather Service extended a flash flood watch for the area until noon local time Sunday.

Paper: Ireland considering reform of corporate tax system

DUBLIN (Reuters) - The Irish government is examining options to close a loophole in its tax system that has allowed multinational companies to significantly reduce taxes they pay on profits, the Sunday Business Post newspaper reported.

Ireland has been criticized by British and U.S. legislators in recent weeks for the fact that multinationals like Apple and Google reduced their global tax bills by channeling profits through Irish subsidiaries.

The Sunday Business Post said Ireland's finance ministry was examining options to phase out the "Double Irish", a tax avoidance technique in which multinationals funnel profits through two linked Irish subsidiaries.

Google's international headquarters in Dublin made tax-deductible payments to a Bermudan subsidiary via a Dutch affiliate in a related arrangement known as a "Double Irish Dutch sandwich."

The Sunday Business Post did not detail what changes might be made to the Irish tax system.

A spokesman for Ireland's finance ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Irish government ministers have said the country's tax system is fair and transparent and that international efforts are needed to curb large scale tax avoidance by multinational companies.
