Spatial skills may be improved through training, including video games

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Spatial skills--those involved with reading maps and assembling furniture--can be improved if you work at it, that's according to a new look at the studies on this topic by researchers at Northwestern University and Temple.

The research published this month in Psychological Bulletin, the journal of the American Psychological Association, is the first comprehensive analysis of credible studies on such interventions.

Improving spatial skills is important because children who do well at spatial tasks such as putting together puzzles are likely to achieve highly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

David Uttal and fellow researchers at Northwestern University with Nora Newcombe, professor of psychology at Temple and principal investigator of the National Science Foundation's Spatial Intelligence and Learning Center, reviewed 217 research studies on educational interventions to improve spatial thinking.

"There are limitations involved with looking at individual studies one by one. What we found when we brought together this large body of literature on training effects and analyzed it was a very powerful message, said Newcombe. "People of all ages can improve at all types of spatial skills through training, period."

Although recent research confirms that spatial abilities uniquely predict STEM achievement, there has been some debate about whether spatial skills can be improved -- and whether such improvement lasts or transfers to new tasks. The new meta-analysis answers all those questions in the affirmative.

The researchers found that spatial skills are indeed malleable and that spatial training transfers to other fields.

"Our findings have significant real world implications by showing that training can have an impact on a technological workforce. With the right training more high school students will be able to consider engineering and other scientific fields as a career option," said Newcombe.

One example of the type of training that can increase spatial abilities is having physics students use three-dimensional representations. Video game playing also increases spatial skills. "Perhaps the most important finding from this meta-analysis is that several different forms of training can be highly successful," the authors say.

"Our hope is that our findings on how to train spatial skills will ultimately lead to highly effective ways to improve STEM performance," said Uttal, the lead author on the study.

The study looked at gender and age differences in relation to spatial thinking and found that in males and females, adults and children, even a small amount of training can improve spatial reasoning and have long-lasting impact.

China's "millet" phone maker hits nearly $1 billion in first half sales

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Technology said it racked up 6.1 billion yuan ($955 million) in revenue in the first half of this year with sales of more than 3 million devices, tapping rapid growth that is fostering domestic brands and is set to make China the world's biggest smartphone market this year.

Xiaomi, which means "millet" and was inspired by a revolutionary phrase of the early Chinese Communist Party, began selling high-end smartphones last October with specifications rivaling those of big global players, but at a relatively low price.

A Xiaomi smartphone with an 8-megapixel camera and a dual-core processor sells for 1,999 yuan ($310).

China's smartphone market is dominated by HTC Corp, Samsung Electronics, Apple Inc, and a clutch of established domestic players such as Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp.

With China's smartphone shipments expected to hit up to 140 million in 2012 according to research firms IDC and Gartner, exceeding the United States for the first time, there is plenty of room for home-grown niche players.

Apple's iPhone China sales stumbled in the latest quarter on inventory adjustments with the launch of the iPhone 4S, but China remains a fast-growing market for Apple and its second-largest.

Xiaomi said it raised $216 million in its latest round of fundraising in June, giving the company a valuation of $4 billion and lifting its market value above that of Blackberry maker Research in Motion.

Xiaomi, founded just two years ago, has raised $347 million in venture funding in total, the firm said in a statement.

Xiaomi smartphones, sold mostly through the Internet using scarcity marketing tactics that limit product availability, are popular with young people.

Another Chinese brand, Meizu, which also sells top-of-the-line smartphones at relatively low prices, has a following among technology fans and draws long lines and crowds to its sales counters during lunchtime.

Australian Court Irked by 'Ridiculous' Apple, Samsung Patent Fight

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Verizon)

Apple and Samsung have made their way down under once again to continue waging their global patent battle.

Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett is apparently not amused. According to Bloomberg, she said the dispute was "ridiculous" and should probably be settled in mediation.

Apple vs. Samsung first made its way to Australia last year after Apple sued Samsung for copying the look and feel of its iOS devices with Galaxy phones and tablets. The fight quickly moved overseas, including Australia. Samsung countersued Apple in September over three patents regarding 3G data transmissions, but not before Australian officials temporarily banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country. It has since been allowed back on store shelves.

Justice Bennett was not happy to see the two companies back in an Australian courtroom. If it were any two other companies, the case would have been sent to settlement talks immediately, she said, according to Bloomberg.

It's not clear if that will actually happen. In the U.S., Apple and Samsung tried to resolve their differences with settlement talks, but to no avail. Recently, in fact, a U.S. court banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country.

The case kicks off about a month after Apple was fined approximately $2 million for misleading the Australian public about the new iPad's 4G capabilities.

President Obama's Covert Zeal for Abortion

23 Jul 2012, 11:04 AM PDT post a comment

President Obama similarly doesn't talk about abortion much. He famously tried to?avoid the question in 2008 when Pastor Rick Warren asked him what rights,?if any, unborn children have. "The answer to that question is above my?pay grade," he said then. With his strong election victory, Barack Obama?was promoted to the office where the buck stops, where such questions?demand an answer. His answer has been clear: none. The unborn have no?rights at any time, in any context.

President Obama has been the most pro-abortion president?in history. That?was a distinction not easily won, especially after eight years of Bill?and Hillary Clinton. They famously said abortion should be "safe, legal, and rare." That seemed to be a middle path. But the only place they made?abortion rare was in Antarctica. President Clinton sent out the Red Cable?to all U.S. Embassies ordering them to press their host countries to?make abortion?on demand legal and paid for by the state.?

Yet, Hillary told Newsweek abortion is "wrong" (October 31, 1994 issue).?She only said it once in her entire career. Still, she said it.?

Barack Obama has never said that. From his first public office, he has?been an advocate for abortion on demand. He led the fight in the?Illinois State Senate to deny protection for newborn children who?survive abortion?attempts. These children are U.S. citizens under the?Fourteenth Amendment. And just as too many states denied "equal?protection of the laws" to black Americans under a century of unjust Jim?Crow laws, Barack Obama denied protection of Illinois laws to newborns in?the Land of Lincoln?because they?had been targeted for abortion. It is?tragically ironic that a disproportionate number of these late-term?botched abortions are performed on minority women.?

As president, Bill Clinton twice vetoed the ban on partial-birth abortions. Elena Kagan strongly urged him to veto the law.?President Obama elevated Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court. This outspoken?advocate of partial-birth abortion, not surprisingly, voted to approve?Obamacare--the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade. We can?have little doubt as to how Kagan will rule if the lawsuits filed by?dozens of Catholic dioceses make it to the Supreme Court. She is unlikely?to surprise and?shock any?liberal abortion advocates as Chief Justice?John Roberts shocked and appalled millions of pro-lifers with his last-minute shift of position. For pro-lifers, the shocks and the surprises?only come one way with the?Supreme Court. Liberal pro-abortion advocates?never find one of their own jumping the traces. They vote in lockstep to?uphold the Culture of Death.

Like the Clintons, President Obama opposed the ban on partial-birth abortions. Nurse Brenda Pratt Shafer described what she saw in?a partial-birth abortion. It requires re-reading now:?

I?stood at the doctor's side and watched him perform a?partial-birth abortion?on a woman who was six months pregnant. The?baby's heartbeat?was clearly?visible on the ultrasound screen. The?doctor delivered the?baby's body?and arms, everything but his little?head. The baby's body was moving. His little fingers were clasping?together. He was kicking his feet. The doctor took a pair of scissors?and inserted them into the back of the baby's head, and the baby's arms?jerked out in a flinch, a startle reaction, like a baby does when he?thinks that he might fall. Then the doctor opened the?scissors and?he?stuck the high-powered?suction tube into the hole and sucked the?baby's brains out. Now the baby was completely limp. I never went back?to the clinic. But I am still haunted by the face of that little boy.?It was the most perfect, angelic face I have ever seen.

Just reading about such a horror led pro-choice liberal columnist Richard?Cohen to oppose it. ?

...the fact remains that the anti-abortion people are on to something.?Late-term abortions may be necessary, but you cannot read about?them without feeling diminished as a human being. Something awful has?happened, and simply as a matter of principle we ought to be opposed. We?ought to say,?in short, that this procedure cannot be used--that?late-term abortions cannot be permitted at all--unless we absolutely have?no choice. ["Reason to?Shudder," Washington Post, July 4, 2000].?

Cohen said then that people who don't shudder at this nightmare make him?shudder. President Obama does not shudder. Nor does Justice Elena Kagan.?They have a cool and detached view. To them, the fetus has no rights,?ever. And "the right to choose" can mean the right to a dead child.?

From his first day in office until now, President Obama has quietly but?vigorously pushed the abortion agenda. He records promotional videos for?Planned Parenthood. This group kills 340,000 of the more than 1,200,000?unborn children killed each year by abortion. Under Obamacare, they will?be able to kill millions more.

Reducing salt 'would cut cancer'

Cutting back on salty foods such as bacon, bread and breakfast cereals may reduce people's risk of developing stomach cancer, according to the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

It wants people to eat less salt and for the content of food to be labelled more clearly.

In the UK, the WCRF said one-in-seven stomach cancers would be prevented if people kept to daily guidelines.

Cancer Research UK said this figure could be even higher.

Too much salt is bad for blood pressure and can lead to heart disease and stroke, but it can also cause cancer.

The recommended daily limit is 6g, about a level teaspoonful, but the World Cancer Research Fund said people were eating 8.6g a day.

Undetected

There are around 6,000 cases of stomach cancer every year in the UK. The WCRF estimated that 14% of cases, around 800, could be avoided if everyone stuck to their 6g a day.

Kate Mendoza, head of health information at WCRF, said: "Stomach cancer is difficult to treat successfully because most cases are not caught until the disease is well-established.

"This places even greater emphasis on making lifestyle choices to prevent the disease occurring in the first place - such as cutting down on salt intake and eating more fruit and vegetables."

Eating too much salt is not all about sprinkling it over fish and chips or Sunday lunch, the vast majority is already inside food.

It is why the WCRF has called for a "traffic-light" system for food labelling - red for high, amber for medium and green for low.

However, this has proved controversial with many food manufacturers and supermarkets preferring other ways of labelling food.

Lucy Boyd, from Cancer Research UK, said: "This research confirms what a recently published report from Cancer Research UK has shown - too much salt also contributes considerably to the number of people getting stomach cancer in the UK.

"On average people in Britain eat too much salt and intake is highest in men.

"Improved labelling - such as traffic light labelling - could be a useful step to help consumers cut down."

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "We already know too much salt can lead to conditions such as heart disease and stroke. That is why we are taking action through the 'Responsibility Deal' to help reduce the salt in people's diets. And we are looking at clearer... labelling on foods as part of our consultation on front-of-pack labelling.

"We keep these findings under review alongside other emerging research in the field."

Final movie rampage victims identified

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Ashley Moser drifted in and out of consciousness in the ICU, a bullet lodged in her throat and a gunshot wound to her abdomen. In her waking moments, she called for her 6-year-old daughter Veronica.

Nobody had the heart to tell the 25-year-old mother that Veronica was already dead, the youngest victim killed at a Colorado movie theater in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.

"All she's asking about, of course, is her daughter," said Annie Dalton, who is Ashley Moser's aunt.

Dalton said Veronica was "a vibrant 6-year-old. She was excited, she'd just learned how to swim. She was a great little girl, excited about life ? she should be at 6 years old."

The little girl was among those who died when a gunman barged into a crowded theater in a Denver suburb, set off gas canisters and opened fire, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Colorado authorities Saturday released the names of the victims killed in the rampage. There were eight men, three women and Veronica Moser-Sullivan, the youngest slain. Gordon Cowden was the oldest. He was 51. All died of gunshot wounds, according to the release by the Arapahoe County coroner's office.

One of the 12, Matthew McQuinn, has been tentatively identified and is awaiting final identification, though his family's attorney confirmed to The Associated Press that McQuinn was among those killed.

Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio, said McQuinn died after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire.

His girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, was in fair condition after being shot in the knee. Her brother, Nick Yowler, was not injured.

The couple had moved to Colorado from Ohio last fall, Scott said.

For Alex Sullivan, it was to be a weekend of fun: He planned to ring in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrate his first wedding anniversary Sunday.

Late Friday, Sullivan's family confirmed that police told them he was among those killed.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him. Witty, smart. He was loving, had a big heart."

Micayla Medek, 23, also was killed.

Her father's cousin, Anita Busch, told the Associated Press that the news, while heartbreaking, was a relief for the family after an agonizing day.

"You can't go that long without knowing," she said. "I hope this evil act ... doesn't shake people's faith in God."

Navy cryptologist John Larimer went to the theater with three other sailors from nearby Buckley Air Force Base, Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Jakuboski said. Larimer was shot and killed, and Jakuboski said losing Larimer felt like losing "one of my sons."

"Losing a sailor, whether it's in combat or whether it's in a horrific domestic situation like this, it's hard. It's tough," he said.

Larimer's family said his brother is working with the Navy to take his body home to Crystal Lake, Ill.

An Air Force reservist who worked at Buckley also was killed in the rampage. Sgt. Jesse Childress, 29, was a cyber-systems operator from Thornton, Colo., said Air Force Capt. Andrew Williams.

Williams described Childress as knowledgeable, experienced and respectful. He says Childress was athletic and played in a kickball and volleyball tournament on base. "He was always our star," Williams said.

A vigil was to be held Saturday night for Alexander J. Boik of Aurora. His family issued a statement saying that he was loved by all that knew him and was dating "a beautiful young lady" who was with him at the theater and survived.

"We want to try and focus on the beautiful lives that were ended and not the evil that is responsible," the family said.

The family of Cowden, another Aurora resident, didn't want to speak to the press Saturday afternoon.

After graduating from high school in Reno, Nev., victim Jonathan Blunk, 26, of Aurora, Colo., served in the Navy between 2004 and 2009 and most recently worked at a hardware store, according to close friend James Gill of Brighton, Colo.

Blunk had plans to re-enlist with a goal of becoming a Navy SEAL, said Gill, who lived with Blunk several years in the Navy and later in Aurora.

Gill described his friend as an avid outdoorsman and gun rights advocate.

"Pretty much every weapon the guy in the theater used he owned," Gill said. "If you asked if he was still alive, he would have said his only regret is he didn't have his sidearm with him and he couldn't do anything to stop him."

Victim Rebecca Ann Wingo, 32, had started a job several months ago as a customer relations representative at a mobile medical imaging company.

Shannon Dominguez, who worked with Wingo on weekends, said she was friendly with everyone and always seemed to be in a good mood.

"I didn't really know her well but she had a really bubbly personality," Dominguez said. "She was a pretty happy person. She just never really seemed ... like with work, she never got irritated. She was pretty happy to be here."

Alexander C. Teves, 24, graduated in June from the University of Denver with a master's degree in counseling psychology, the school said.

The university identified Teves' hometown as Phoenix. School officials said they had no other information immediately available.

An aspiring sports reporter who recently wrote a blog post about surviving a Toronto shooting was killed, the woman's brother said.

The death of Jessica Ghawi, who was also known as Jessica Redfield, was a "complete and utter shock," said her brother, Jordan Ghawi.

Jessica Ghawi, 24, moved to Denver from Texas about a year ago and friends and colleagues described her as outgoing, smart and witty.

Ghawi blogged at length about surviving the Eaton Centre mall shooting in Toronto that killed two people and sent several others to the hospital.

Jessica Ghawi wrote of the Toronto shooting: "I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders' faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath."

Handpicked Tips And Tricks For Interior Design Projects ...

Use high quality window finishings to give your home an elegant appeal. Choose window finishings that will block out some light, but not block out light entirely. You want to keep your rooms looking bright and open for a great feeling in every room. Consider hiring a designer to help you pick out the window finishings in your room.

An old dresser can make a lovely bathroom vanity. You can have the dresser customized so you are able to fit a sink bowl at the top and a space for faucets too. This is a wonderful way to re-purpose old furniture and it adds an unique charm to your home.

Add a daybed to your guest bedroom. Many daybeds provide additional storage underneath that you could use for out of season clothing or paperwork. In addition, a daybed takes up a smaller amount of space so it makes your room feel less cluttered and leaves enough space for a desk if you need one.

Try decorating with maps. Maps are a fun and inexpensive way to decorate a room. You can frame them and hang them on the wall as art or you can adhere them directly to your walls as wallpaper. They are great for children?s rooms and home offices. Make the decor more personal by using maps of places you?ve been, your hometown, or places you dream of going.

Use a closet as storage space for your office papers. Just add a few decorative baskets with manila files inside to hold your paperwork. You can use a label maker to add labels to the front of each basket. This frees up space in your room, versus using a filing cabinet, and it keeps paperwork clutter behind closed doors.

Pedestal sinks are wonderful choices in small bathrooms. These types of sinks take up less space, and they make a small bathroom look bigger. They also have an elegant appeal to them that is classic and works with any decor. You can find them at your local home improvement store at many different price points.

Those looking to design a room in their home should be smart about it. Whatever items you decide to decorate your room with should not take away from the functionality of the room. For example, don?t put a large piece in an area that where there will be a lot of traffic.

If it is possible for you to do so, you can make your living room look better by putting in the fireplace. In addition to giving the living room a comfortable feeling, it will also be great for resale value, should you decide to sell your home in the future.

Avoid catering to any design trends that are currently popular. These trends are often expensive, and they?ll be out of style fairly quickly. Go with something timeless that you think looks good. Don?t let what current trends say are good influence how you want your place to look. Follow your heart, not a trendy magazine.

Try new towels in your bathroom. You may not be able to re-tile your bathroom or replace your bathtub, but you an always admire the effect of new towels. Try bold colors if your bathroom seems a bit drab, or calming colors like blue and green if you want to create an oasis.

Interior design is made easier with a software program. There are many programs that will allow you to take a picture of your existing space and create your look inside of that picture. This is a great way to visualize the changes in the the space before making them happen.

Be sure to plan out your full project before you start. This will enable to know whether or not you will be able to afford everything that you want. There is nothing worse than getting half-way done with a project to only come to a standstill because you ran out of funds.

A good interior design tip is to not get too carried away with color. There have been many studies made on color and how they can effect you. Even if you love strong colors and they fit with your personality, the next family or couple that moves in might be put off by them.

If you have children you should take them into consideration before planning your interior design project. For example, you will probably want to stay away from furniture pieces that have extremely sharp corners, as your children can easily harm themselves on them. It would be a waste if you were to purchases pieces that end up breaking or causing harm to your children.

A great interior design tip is to start going hunting for antiques. You don?t have to pay a fortune to get some interesting antiques. You can always go to local stores and try to barter with them. Who knows, you might end up with something that will spark many conversations.

Design a home for comfort first and appearance second. Comfort should always be a priority. Regardless of how nice it looks, you are going to want a home to be pleasant to live in. Consider the practicality of any and all changes or additions you plan to make before making them.

When starting to plan your home improvement project you should think about what areas you can save money. If you can create your project under budget, that will leave you with money to work on another space in your home, or to use somewhere else. Remember that expensive does not necessarily mean better.

Now that you read the information from above, you should be aware of all the different uses of lighting that can be incorporated into interior design. Use the tips from this article as a guide, but do not be afraid to experiment on your own to see what works for the space that you have.
