Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin hits the web, with HUD in tow
It's here! Precise Pangolin or, as it's officially known, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Canonical's latest is now available in its final(ish) form and ready for you to download, burn and install. While LTS (Long Term Support) releases are generally more conservative in their application of new features, Pangolin does include some rather notable tweaks. The most immediately noticeable will be the new log in screen which, while largely the same, does have the slick new trick of changing wall papers to match the selected user. A more subtle change is revealed once you've logged on and press alt -- HUD. The new search-based menu system is quite a departure from traditional interaction models, and one that will come as a relief to those who constantly forget where a particular option is buried. Perhaps the most welcome change, though, is the vastly improved performance and power management. Ubuntu, for all of its finer points, has never been particularly battery friendly. But Canonical is promising that is going to change. We'll have to wait to find out once we get this bad boy installed on some machines of our own. You know the drill, hit up the source link to download it for yourself, for free.
Update: Well, looks like all you Ubuntu fanatics have taken out the site temporarily. We're sure it'll be back soon but, in the meantime, you can still download the latest version of the OS here (magnet link).

Rosie O'Donnell Worries Lindsay Lohan Will Die Like Whitney Houston
Rosie O'Donnell is not holding back in her strange crusade against Lindsay Lohan, saying if she doesn't change her life, she could die like Whitney Houston.
Rosie went back on Today show this morning to expand on why she believes LiLo should not have been cast as Liz Taylor in an upcoming Lifetime movie.
Or any acting role, for that matter.
O'Donnell suggested Lindsay is heading down a similar path as the late, great Whitney Houston, and can only be saved if she takes time off from showbiz.
The ruthless Hollywood machine is slowly killing Lohan, Rosie feels, and she says feels obligated to speak out about the 25-year-old actress because:
"Watching Whitney Houston's funeral I recall thinking, 'Why didn't more people say what they knew?' We all knew. We watched Being Bobby Brown - it was like watching Sid and Nancy ... they were people in the throes of addiction."
"All anyone cared about was that the show was getting ratings. To look at Lindsay Lohan, you can't help but feel for her ... and I do not think she's untalented, I think she's quite talented. But this is a dangerous situation."
What do you think? Is Rosie totally off base or should she zip it? Lindsay has brushed off her attacks, but might she be better off heeding the warnings?

George Zimmerman Raises $200K For Legal Defense
George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer accused of murdering Trayvon Martin, has raised at least $200,000 online to fund his defense.
Donors contributed "just over $200,000" on a website to help pay for the defense of Zimmerman, who was released on bail earlier this week, his lawyer said.
Mark O'Mara added that the site, therealgeorgezimmerman (dot) com, has since been shut down for unknown reasons and Zimmerman remains in hiding.
Zimmerman is living in an undisclosed location as he awaits trial on charges of second-degree murder in the February shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
The killing, which took place as Martin walked unarmed through a gated community in the central Florida town of Sanford, has gained national attention.
Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty and says he killed Martin in self defense. In a stunning move, he apologized to Martin's family at his bail hearing.
The sensational case has prompted civil rights protests and a national debate over guns, self-defense laws, racial profiling and media bias in America.
O'Mara told CNN that he would inform the judge in the case of the funds he has raised on Friday. No date has been set for his official arraignment.

Star Wars Arcade gets fan made mini-me, weeps tears of joy (video)
Arcade fan (and genius) Le Chuck got up one morning and thought "Why not build a perfect replica of Atari's Star Wars Arcade, at 1:6 scale?" The result is this amazing 12-inch cabinet with a fully working Atari-yoke, handmade from aluminum and a pair of potentiometers. Tucked inside the box is a modded Caanoo running MAME4all, which has been tweaked to boot straight into the game when activated. The whole project took him over 80 hours to put together, but we think it was time very well spent. If you want to see the thing in action (and sing along to the 8-bit version of the theme) then head on past the break.

Galaxy S3 spotted in Samsung Kies software
The latest appearance -- if you can call it that -- of Samsung's next Galaxy phone seems to give further weight to the possibility that it'll be called the "Samsung Galaxy S3". The name has appeared today in Samsung's Kies PC software, which is used for synchronizing personal media to Samsung smartphones and tablets. The entry is found in a very specific place -- you'll need to go to "Samsung Apps", select "France" as your region and then track it down in the list of phones that appears.
There appear to be two variants of the device -- GT-i9300 (which we're already familiar with) and GT-i9300T. Unfortunately, though, there's no way of telling what separates the two devices at this stage. Also, don't get too excited about the tiny thumbnail image up there, it's just a Galaxy Note (compare it to the Note image directly below).
So it's looking increasingly likely that "Galaxy S3" is indeed the name. But however things play out at the May 3 announcement event, we'll be there to bring you full coverage. In the meantime, you can chat it up in the Galaxy S3 forums.
